Watching my BobBlasts, you may have noticed I use my my painting table tops as my palettes. I paint flat on tables, so it makes sense the palette should be also. I create this palette by covering the entire top with a tight plastic sheet.
What kind of plastic? A shower curtain, dry cleaner's bags or a flimsy plastic tablecloth? Absolutely not!
Get a roll of 4' x 50' Poly-ethylene plastic sheeting, 4 mil thick from the hardware store - my favorite brand is Husky.
After I cut the plastic to cover the table top, I tape the plastic down tightly with strong, sticky packing tape. My favorite tape is self-adhesive box tape from Uline. This becomes my reusable and permanent palette.
Heavy-Bodied Paint (I use Holbein) is squeezed onto the table/palette. Because the table is my palette, I mix my paint on the table, not on the painting.
Here’s the fun part - Making Skins:
I re-use my plastic palette for many days! When I have built-up thick layers of paint, and the paint layers have dried - then, I can peel the paint off the plastic. The plastic is clean again and I have 100% acrylic paint "skins" that I will use as collage material.
Remember - In order to peel off the paint skins, the paint ideally is 3-4 days worth of dried paint and thick enough to peel off in large sections. You can use either side, by the way!
Check out my Circus Bird above, made by both painting and collaging acrylic skins! Too much fun!
