ST. LOUIS CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY COLLABORATION BUILDS NEW CAREER FOR AFGHAN REFUGEE
Being in the right place at the right time is the conventional path to success. For Mohammed Shamil Khorasani (who goes by Shamil) that path was a case of being in the wrong place at the right time.

The St. Louis community, and in particular the construction industry came together to help Shamil find his place here. He recently began a position with Millstone Weber, where he will be a quality control inspector, and eventually a project engineer.

Betsy Cohen is executive director of the St. Louis Economic Partnership’s St. Louis Mosaic Project, called Construction Forum and asked for assistance. Cohen said that Mosaic has been working with six men who recently arrived here from Afghanistan with solid English skills and transferable job skills. Six of the men, including Shamil, have found positions.

“It’s heartwarming from a personal point of view and economic point of view to see the commitment of people in our region to helping people with marketable skills connect,” Cohen said.
