Greetings, SCS Family -

The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) today announced its annual 2021 Superintendents to Watch, and we are excited to share that our superintendent, Dr. Joris M. Ray, has been named one of the honorees.

This annual award recognizes school district leaders with fewer than five years of experience as a superintendent who demonstrate dynamic, fast-paced leadership with strong communication at its core.

Dr. Ray was recognized for the enhanced communication and engagement strategies and efforts that have been implemented over the last few years including the Superintendent weekly video updates during the pandemic, virtual family town halls, the @scssuptray social media page, and prioritizing teacher input in district and school decisions through the District Teacher Advisory Council (DTAC).

While grappling with the uncertainties of the pandemic, Dr. Ray faced tough decisions head-on for the safety of students, staff and the community. Monumental tasks were executed and awareness efforts were significantly increased in response to ever-changing health and safety guidance including:

Distribution of digital devices to 95,000+ students within eight weeks
Launching a fundraiser for headsets to enhance virtual learning
Pushing the prioritization of vaccinations for teachers and educators
Engaging and encouraging teacher input through his District Teacher Advisory Council (DTAC)
Launching a weekly television lesson series in multiple subjects for students when schools were shuttered
Accelerating the implementation of the District’s vision to REIMAGINE education, communities, and schools in the 901
Galvanizing community and faith-based organizations through strategic outreach efforts including virtual input/listening sessions, virtual family forums, and community town halls
Creating programs to address inequities for underrepresented students
