Pocono Plateau’s Mission Statement:

To provide welcoming spaces immersed in natural surroundings for all to experience the Spirit of God and love of Jesus through community, recreation, and reflection.

Hello Friends!

"Commit to the Lord, whatever you do, and He will establish your plans." ~ Proverbs 16:3

We are blessed to work with a team of staff and volunteers who care deeply about this space and want to see its ministry thrive into the future. I want to say thank you to those who provided their guidance and insight in our Strategic Planning process and to those on the 2024 Site Committee who will engage in carrying out the vision of this plan.

Below, you will find a link to a summary document sharing some of the exciting results of the strategic planning process. This document looks back, providing information on past trends, and looks forward with anticipation for growth and revitalization of the ministry.

Why do we look back to look ahead?

As a team, we gathered, shared about our experiences and love of this ministry, defined an updated mission statement and core values, and discussed the urgency of needing a future vision to pull Pocono Plateau forward from declining financial results. Over the past decade, camper numbers declined resulting in donations becoming a necessary part of operating income instead of providing for capital improvements. The pandemic further impacted Pocono Plateau's sustainability.

Looking back is not to place blame, but to understand circumstances impacting the viability of the ministry. We must understand our history, trends, demographics, community needs, and past/present ability to offer a place set apart for transformation and renewal. Our review considered changing technology, completing priorities for families, the general decline in UMC church attendance, and the needs for gathering space for outside groups. We dreamed of a future where Pocono Plateau's ministry continues to shape the faith formation of generations through both camp and retreat opportunities.

Our strategic plan includes four key areas: Executive, Operations, Program/Ministry, and Facility/Property. I invite you to review the summary and pray for these initiatives.

Stay tuned for a future note on ways you can engage with the ministry through offering gifts/talents, providing financial support, volunteering, or joining one of our camper and staff alumni channels!

PLATEAU FEST NEEDS YOU!

Planning for the Plateau Fest Weekend in September is underway! This weekend is our biggest fundraising opportunity and it includes the 11th annual 5K/15K, a silent auction, festival atmosphere, ropes course, boating, and family friendly activities. The weekend closes with worship, led this year Plateau Staff and Rev. Candy LaBar from Wesley Church in Bethlehem.

How can you help?

  • Click on button to sign up to provide a gift basket for our silent auction. Some ideas include: movie night, for foodie, coffee lovers, sports, wellness, self care. Click to email Carmen!

  • Donate your professional services. A great option for photographers, chefs, organizing & cleaning, masseuse, or crafter. Click to email Carmen!

  • We need sponsor donations to cover the cost of the 5K/15K. If you own or work for a small business, this is a great way to participate in giving back to camp & retreat ministry.

  • Share information and the registration link with friends and family! This is a great chance for churches to come up together in fellowship with others without all the planning required for their own separate retreat!

STAFF HIGHLIGHT

“If therefore, there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfish or empty conceit, but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than oneself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interest of others.” - Philippians 2:1-4 NASV

Despite the run-on sentences, which, by the way, is a common way that I also write, this is quite a list of attributes that we see in this verse. So often when I share, I talk about serving. This is probably because I am so impressed by so many people that have come to serve at the camp. We could probably say that there are hundreds of people that are on staff at Pocono Plateau Camp And Retreat Center, but only handful are paid.

So I’d like to share in memorial this month about Al Miles. I have had an opportunity a couple of times to have him take on projects for the camp while I’ve been here. This last summer he came up here to reminisce of the different things that he had an opportunity to work on at the camp. He had shared with me some of those projects. He worked on the new construction at Springer Lodge, multiple days of Wood Cutter weekends and other projects. I feel privileged to be a part of those memories with him; to witness his love that he had towards the camp and fishing on the lake.

The above verse doesn’t really say the word serving, but it does talk of the attitude of serving, of looking beyond ourselves and onto the needs of others. The verse reflects a lot that we try to express here. It’s the primary reason why this camp is here, to provide for the needs of others. It is a place to get away from the distractions of their lives that is safe and the spirit of God is easily recognized. The spirit of God is felt by so many in the nature by which we are surrounded or the comfortable surroundings of our buildings, and so many of the people that come here looking for a retreat, but also looking to serve others.

I think it’s important that we provide a place for people to come to serve. As in Al’s life, I think other people find an enrichment in using their talents and their gifts to provide for the camp and our campers.

I am at your service, in the service of the King,

John Gylleck
