Connectivity is the Basis of Everything We Do

Have you ever wanted to truly understand the OSI model (Open Systems Interconnection) that defines the computer networking framework--the system that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of our telecommunications industry? Do you understand the various OSI model layers L1- L7 and the products and services that suppliers like AireSpring can deliver over them? If you’ve been selling technology that you didn’t really understand, now is your chance to get the information you’ve been missing.

All applications, security, SD-WAN, voice, CCaaS, UCaaS, IoT, and even AI rely on robust connectivity to function properly. In today's digital landscape, connectivity isn't merely a convenience—it's the cornerstone of operational efficiency and competitive advantage. From the Physical Layer 1, through the Data Link Layer 2, to the Network Layer 3 through the Transport, Session, Presentation, and the Layer 7 Application levels, each layer has its abilities and suitability for certain connectivity and services. From Layer 1 Fiber through Layer 3 DIA and MPLS, Layer 5 SD-WAN and Layer 7 Firewalls, understanding the difference between the various network layers and the services that run on top of those connections is key to servicing your clients with the solutions they need to run their business.

Join AireSpring Solutions Engineer, Chuck Long, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET, as he explains the difference between the seven network layers providing examples and use cases at each level. This is an educational, content-rich webinar where we explore the fundamentals of network technology and the services that run over those layers.

To begin, please tell us a little about yourself and your agency.

Versutia Solutions opened its doors in 1999 but formally adopted the name Versutia in 2006. Versutia, a Latin derivative for “innovative,” tries to be that for their clients. When I’m asked, I tell people we’re a “recovering MSP,” which generally gets half a chuckle. Constantly evolving over the past 20-plus years, we have found ourselves firmly planted in a technology advisor role.

Along the way, I helped co-found a cloud UCaaS company back in 2014 that we were able to grow over the subsequent 4 years to an acquisition exit. Thanks in large part to that endeavor, we found ourselves well-positioned with deep expertise in voice, connectivity, and cloud infrastructure. It was at this point that we leaned into the channel, bringing our expertise to work for our customers all over the globe.

What do you like about working with AireSpring?

"We’ve been impressed by AireSpring’s regionalized expertise in some locales that aren’t always the easiest to navigate, like the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions."

Working with the team at AireSpring quite simply has enabled us to lean in on our partnership and offload much of the minutia, freeing us up to remain focused on bigger-picture facets of the projects we’re involved in. Carrier/order management, pricing, project management, and all the areas that can bleed our workweek of countless hours when you’re dealing with larger deployments. In global deployments, we’ve been impressed by AireSpring’s regionalized expertise in some locales that aren’t always the easiest to navigate, like the Asia-Pacific and Latin American regions.

Being able to just count on AireSpring, and knowing we’ll get updated when something needs my personal attention has been invaluable. I enjoy that AireSpring is happy to engage based on how we work and don’t try to dictate how things operate. They will let us set the rules of engagement on a customer-by-customer basis when necessary. We enjoy that nimbleness. Finally, our customers also enjoy working with AireSpring, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters most.

What would you say is the secret to being a successful technology advisor/sales agent in today’s marketplace?

Availability, personality, and expertise are key to being a successful trusted advisor, as well as the key characteristics of a good agent/agency. At Versutia, we work with customers of all shapes and sizes, from SMB to global enterprise. One thing we are constantly told is how much our customers appreciate the fact that we are always quick to respond regardless of their size. We aim to treat every customer as though they are our best customer.

"Whether you develop that bench in-house or leverage engineering resources from the TSD or your top suppliers, your customers will appreciate you being able to educate them and solve their challenges."

We’ve all heard the saying “people do business with people they like and trust.” It might be cliché, but I don’t think that is something we can ever afford to forget. There are a lot of great agencies out there, which means customers have lots of great options. Give them a reason to choose you over and over again. The easiest way to do that is to be there when they need you and to make that process one they enjoy and not one they’d rather avoid. Surrounding yourself with the right team(s) of experts is the name of the game. Whether you develop that bench in-house or leverage engineering resources from the technology solutions distributor (TSD) or your top suppliers, your customers will appreciate you being able to educate them and solve their challenges. Often, they don’t know what they don’t know. This is probably part of the reason you’re at the table in the first place. Don’t miss a chance to impart value by way of educating your customers.

What do you foresee happening in the channel in 2024 (or, what is the “next big thing” or “things” you think people should be aware of or get involved in, etc.)?

"All AI is not created equal and it’s our job to know the difference."

The fact is, AI is already creating a paradigm shift in how we consume technology. There’s plenty of room to improve, but just look at how quickly we’ve come from “Will Smith eating spaghetti” (google it) to that Mark Zuckerberg deep fake. From ChatGPT, to Midjourney and whatever one will be released 10 minutes from now, AI is here to stay.

Your customers are pining for ways to leverage it. Suppliers are scrambling for ways to incorporate it. We agents need to help our customers navigate this new quagmire. All AI is not created equal and it’s our job to know the difference. Outside of AI, I still see lots of mergers and acquisitions both in the channel from the supplier side as well as markets overall, affecting our customers. We’re also seeing continued returns to the office and/or hybrid office, so we’re going to see plenty more contact centers, an increased need for SD-WAN and SASE, and, hopefully, a lot more organizations taking cybersecurity seriously, maybe for the first time.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of telecom?

Living in Florida certainly lends itself to being outdoors. I love to be on (or under) the water. I have been scuba diving for about 15 years. My 14-year-old son just got certified last year so now I have a dive buddy. Scalloping, lobstering, spearfishing, you name it, we’re here for it. If you’re in a web meeting with me and my camera is off, there’s a greater-than-0 percent chance I’m on the boat with a line in the water. My diving hasn’t always been fun though. Before moving to Florida, I volunteered as a county rescue and recovery diver. Unfortunately, it’s as sad as it sounds. I also volunteered as a firefighter. With the adrenaline-fueled part of my volunteer career behind me, I am involved in some less-dangerous volunteer activities, like being involved in soup kitchens, or working with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization which builds and delivers beds for disadvantaged children in the area. Otherwise, you’ll probably find my wife and I cheering on our two kids either at a track meet or on the sidelines at a soccer match.

Tell us about your professional background and jobs you’ve held prior to joining AireSpring.

I have over 15 years of experience in the telecom industry. My first position was in account management at ITS Telecom (Integrated Telemanagement Services, Inc.), located in Simi Valley, California, and I was there for seven years. I then worked for AmeriTel, a voice and data service provider, where I was a B2B sales professional. While in these roles, I specialized in selling internet circuits and voice over IP (VoIP) services.

After a few years at AmeriTel, I wanted to switch careers and get into something related to IT, which led to me coming to AireSpring. I didn’t actually end up taking an IT position, however. While learning more about AireSpring during the interview process, I took more of an interest in the potential of how I could support the sales team with my past experience and working in pricing and offer management ended up being a great fit for me.

Tell us about your role at AireSpring and how your support our channel partners and their clients.

My primary function is to help us bring in new business, design solutions, and ensure a quality solution for the customer. We collaborate with partners and channel managers and engage in conversations with vendors and carriers to make sure that what we're putting in front of the customer is the ideal option. Our goal is to minimize the number of issues and challenges that we could have on the backend when we're trying to place the orders, while also helping to equip our sales team with pricing options that are more competitive than the competition.

For me, the most exciting part of the role is being able to put our channel partners in a position to win. With the work that we do, we’re giving them the best chance to win their opportunities. It's a fast-paced environment and there's always something happening. In my role, there's always a lot to learn and it always keeps me busy.

What do you like about working at AireSpring?

AireSpring was a competitor of mine for several years, so I got to learn about the company that way. When I was looking for a new opportunity, I immediately thought of AireSpring. As I mentioned, I wanted a completely different role from what I had over the prior 10 or so years, and while I didn’t go down the path that I had intended to find, I instead found something I thought would be a really great fit for me, and I really enjoy working with the team I’m a part of now.

One of the other great things about working at AireSpring is that everybody is very welcoming. From the interview process on, I felt at home here. It’s a very family-oriented environment. The fact that it’s a privately-owned, debt-free company is unique to the industry, and the stability that comes from that is important to me.

Tell us about your hobbies outside of work.

Spending time with family is a main hobby of mine. I have a four-year-old and she is the center of attention when it comes to our family time. I’m also a major sports fan—basketball and soccer, primarily. I’m a Chicago Bulls fan, and I’m a big San Francisco 49’ers fan.

I'm a big music person too, and when we have the time, we like to go to concerts. I like hip hop and R&B mostly, but I’ll also branch out to other genres from time to time. I recently went to a concert in Vancouver, Canada—to see a hip hop group called BadBadNotGood—and that was a lot of fun.
