SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION
SERMON NOTES
Palm Sunday begins Holy Week. This journey in Lent where we make our way to the cross. Three major church holidays all take place this week. Maundy Thursday is the time of remembering the final Passover that Jesus shared with his disciples. There is Good Friday, the day in which Jesus will be betrayed, arrested, tried, convicted, and put to death. And then Easter comes on Sunday. And Easter is the day in which we celebrate our transformation as new people. Made new through the gift and love of Jesus’s life, death, resurrection, and ascension. So join us this week, as we find that the tomb is empty and Christ has risen, he is risen indeed.
Yours in Christ
Brandon

SOLAR UPDATE
Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church is going solar. If this is news to you, then you get to join in on the celebration right now! For many years, faithful people at Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church has thought, prayed, and planned for a future when the church would be ready and able to have a solar project on the roof. Well that plan has sped up faster than I think any of us could have imagined this past 6 months. This past week, the Energy Efficiency Commission and myself signed the contract with our solar vender. This means that parts are being ordered and shipped to Johnson City, TN and we are well on our way to having them installed this spring. While there is still some work that needs to be done, this is a moment where we get to celebrate. Celebrate all the work that God has been doing and will continue to do through this church. Thank you all for the support and work and we will be updating you about the project when things start moving.

YESTERDAY'S GREEN WALK
There was a nice group of individuals who joined us on our walk at Winged Deer Park to see the bluebells. A nice leisurely stroll through the woods was just what everyone needed. And look at those smiles. Once we have the details for our next walk, they will be posted in a future e-Avenue. You are welcome to join us on any of our walks. The more the merrier.

Jesus the Sage: The Pilgrimage of Wisdom
By Ben Witherington III (223/WIT)
The path of wisdom from Solomon to Jesus and from Jesus to the church In the early Jesus movement, wisdom in the person of Jesus was believed to have returned to heaven, exalted to the right hand of God, and to reign from there. But Jesus as wisdom had left both his legacy and his influence behind. The sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels reflect not only the influence of the Israelite wisdom traditions, but also the tradition of the personification of wisdom.
| |
In this provocative volume newly available in paperback, Ben Witherington provides both an introduction to Israel's wisdom traditions and insight into how Jesus and his sayings fit in that tradition. Beyond this, he demonstrates the on-going significance and influence of these traditions on other New Testament writings. He concludes that Jesus may be viewed primarily as a prophetic sage emphasizing instruction, insight, and humor in a vein counter to the dominant culture.
