Dear ones,
The sanctorale for The Episcopal Church has been greatly clarified by the action of the General Convention this year. There have been many ‘modifications’ made since the adoption of Lesser Feasts and Fasts - 2006. Some were good; some not so much. There was pretty universal dissatisfaction with the jumbled mess that resulted. I’m thankful for the work that was done this year to make some sense of the chaos that had existed. You’ll see some of these show up as the commemorations on Wednesday evenings.
The Book of Common Prayer defines the Calendar of the Church Year on pages 15-17. It delineates which are the Principal Feasts, Sundays, Holy Days, Other Major Feasts, and Days of Special Devotion and Days of Optional Observance.
One characteristic of an Anglo-Catholic parish is the frequency of celebrations of the mass. Here at Ascension, there used to be mass every day (at least once), in addition to Morning and Evening Prayer. Morning and Evening Prayer still happen daily, but the daily mass had ceased before the pandemic. The effect of this was that the Holy Days and Other Major Feasts were only celebrated if they happened to fall on Wednesday.
There is much we can learn from these Holy Days and Other Major Feasts. Mtr. Murphy-Gill and I have added these to our calendar. If any fall on a Wednesday, we will observe them at 6:30 PM. All of the others will be observed at 12:00 PM. I started this off with Independence Day on 4 July. Mtr. Murphy-Gill will celebrate Saint Mary Magdalene on Friday, 22 July, and I will celebrate Saint James the Apostle on 25 July. For now, these will be in-person only. We’d love to see you in attendance, taking advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the saints who shaped the early church.

A few months ago, I was sitting with a group of clergy who were discussing how to spiritually feed their parishioners throughout the week. “Sunday-only” Christians, was the term being tossed around. I found myself caught up in the conversation when another priest pointed out that the Eucharist was the important thing to offer our communities and perhaps this ought to guide our thinking about what more (or less) we need to be doing outside of our principal Sunday worship times. Not all the clergy who were gathered share such a pronounced piety around the Eucharist—but I do, and I began to wonder what this could mean for my ministry at Ascension.
Shortly after that conversation, I got in touch with Warren Barr, the rehabilitation center just around the corner where at least one of our members currently resides and asked if they would be open to having an Episcopal celebration of Eucharist. The activities coordinator was excited and booked the activities room for June. After one mass in which nearly 20 residents and caretakers attended, she asked if I could start coming regularly. I returned just this week with just as many attendees.
I’d like to grow this ministry to include spending time visiting with residents, but I need your help and your input. If you are available the third or fourth Tuesday of each month from 2 to 3 pm, I want to know! Please get in touch with me by phone (312-664-1271) or email.

Acolyte Retreat
All who serve as acolytes in our parish are invited and encouraged to gather after worship on Sunday, August 7 at 1:00 PM for an acolyte retreat and workshop. Lunch will be served! We hope this will be an opportunity to recognize your service, clarify liturgical questions or notes, and enjoy a bit of fellowship together. We'll also have a chance to talk with Fr. Heard, find out how we can best assist him, and discuss ideas that may make it easier for us all to serve together. Please mark your calendars and expect more details, including a chance to RSVP, soon. We hope to see you there.

Do you have a need for special prayer in your life? Whether your prayer needs are because you have an upcoming surgery, an ill family member, or you’re just feeling particularly lonely lately, Fr. Heard and Mtr. Murphy-Gill would like to know.
We’ve created a way for letting us know about your requests for prayers in a way we hope makes it easy for you to reach out, though you can always call the church or reach out to one of the priests personally.
