Black History Month

May we honor and celebrate our Black siblings every day and in every way, as we worship God who created each of us in God's divine image and calls us beloved.
Our Lady of Unassailable Well-being, by Ruth Miller.
Hand-embroidered wool on fabric, 2015
From Toni Morrison's classic novel, Beloved:

When warm weather came, Baby Suggs, holy, followed by every black man, woman, and child who could make it through, took her great heart to the Clearing--a wide-open place cut deep in the woods nobody knew for what at the end of the path known only to deer and whoever cleared the land in the first place. In the heat of every Saturday afternoon, she sat in the clearing while the people waited among the trees.

After situating herself on a huge flat-sided rock, Baby Suggs bowed her head and prayed silently. The company watched her from the trees. They knew she was ready when she put her stick down. Then she shouted, 'Let the children come!' and they ran from the trees toward her.

Let your mothers hear you laugh,' she told them, and the woods rang. The adults looked on and could not help smiling.

Then 'Let the grown men come,' she shouted. They stepped out one by one from among the ringing trees.

Let your wives and your children see you dance,' she told them, and groundlife shuddered under their feet.

Finally she called the women to her. 'Cry,' she told them. 'For the living and the dead. Just cry.' And without covering their eyes the women let loose.

It started that way: laughing children, dancing men, crying women and then it got mixed up. Women stopped crying and danced; men sat down and cried; children danced, women laughed, children cried until, exhausted and riven, all and each lay about the Clearing damp and gasping for breath. In the silence that followed, Baby Suggs, holy, offered up to them her great big heart.

She did not tell them to clean up their lives or go and sin no more. She did not tell them they were the blessed of the earth, its inheriting meek or its glorybound pure.

She told them that the only grace they could have was the grace they could imagine. That if they could not see it, they would not have it.

Here,' she said, 'in this here place, we flesh; flesh that weeps, laughs; flesh that dances on bare feet in grass. Love it. Love it hard...”

ICA Update
ICA Bazaar Looking to Expand
The ICA Bazaar is an online social enterprise that helps financially support the mission of ICA. All items sold online are new, never been used clearance, returned or salvaged household items. All funds raised go directly into ICA programming (which includes food, homelessness prevention, resources and employment assistance).

The ICA Bazaar is currently reaching out to community businesses and accepting a variety of household items (but not limited to): small furniture, rugs, kitchenware, beauty items, toys and more. All items must be new or unused and will be sold at approximately 30% of their retail value.

Do you know of a business that may have clearance or salvageable items available for donation? If so, please contact [email protected] or (952) 250-1772.

Take a few minutes to check out what can be found in the online Bazaar. Go to icafoodshelf.org. In the menu section, choose Events, then ICA Bazaar. You just might find something for yourself or a family member. This is another easy way to support the ICA Food Shelf.

Items needed this month of February
ICA is currently running low on the following items:
* cereal (hot & cold)
* tea, coffee, Keurig cups
* ramen noodles
* olive oil
* baby food, baby wipes
* wet & dry cat food
* kitty litter
* paper products

Since the pandemic started and, especially when we are not physically gathering at St. David’s, there has been some decrease in the number of items donated to ICA. This is certainly understandable since life has not been “normal” for way too long & folks just aren’t getting out as much. However, the needs of our neighbors has not diminished, but actually have increased during this time.

One of our parishioners shared a couple suggestions of ways she reminds herself about ICA Collection Sunday (the 3rd Sunday of each month).
1. Put ICA in your digital or written calendar for the 3rd Sundays
2. When grocery shopping, consider picking up an item or two for ICA each time and keep in a specific bag, so you have items ready to donate when you see this reminder in the Weekly News.

Items you wish to donate can be left in the baskets provided at the south and east entrances at any time. However, while we are in the dead of winter, do not leave items whose quality may be compromised by being frozen. If you prefer, online donations are another good option (www.icafoodshelf.org, then choose Donate from the menu). Please know your periodic donation of food or cash is always appreciated and really does make a difference.

Worship Plans for February
St. David’s Covid Safety team met on January 20th. We are encouraged that signs are indicating that a peak in this Omicron wave could come soon (or has already happened), but we recognize that it will take several weeks for cases to settle down to a safe level and for the burden on the healthcare system to be reduced. We also believe that having some stability and predictability in this challenging time is beneficial for everyone, especially for the many people involved with worship planning. We have therefore decided to continue to worship via Zoom on Sunday mornings for the month of February.

We know how important it is to connect with God and one another through worship, prayer, music, and fellowship. We believe the Morning Prayer format on Zoom best fulfills these goals for virtual worship. Thanks to all who have prepared for and participated in the service over the past couple of weeks. If you haven’t experienced it yet, we would love to have you join us. It is possible to connect via phone and we also record and post the service to our YouTube channel for later viewing. If you are having any technical issues with Zoom, please reach out to Paul Smejkal ([email protected]) or Jeff Ronbeck ([email protected]). If you would like to be involved in an upcoming service, reach out to Katherine or Roger. We will continue to offer links to services at St. Mark’s and Washington National Cathedrals for those who prefer a more traditional service.

Thank you to all for your understanding and flexibility. We are hopeful that we will be able to be back in person for worship in March.

In this time of the coronavirus pandemic, the need to reach our most vulnerable parishioners has been great. Our 11 person Pastoral Care Team has stepped up to the plate and has been regularly calling around 24 St. David's members and families to share in remote fellowship, prayer, and conversation to determine if we, as a community, could help address any of their unmet needs. We are pleased to report that virtually all of these parishioners are doing well so far and have their basic needs met by their facilities and/or family. They are in good spirits and continue to remain resilient in the face of isolation and uncertainty.

If you find yourself in need of food or other resources, please contact:
Steve Johnson at: [email protected] or (952) 237-0031
or:
The Rev. Katherine Lewis at: [email protected] or (612) 747-5405

and we will assist you in finding solutions.
