January may be a sleepy month for much of the world, but not for the hardworking folks in our event department. The first two weeks of this year have seen a reading with fan favorite Elinor Lipman and a story time with local picture book luminaries Phaea Crede and Jannie Ho. Our Spring events calendar will grow steadily over the next several weeks, but we're already excited to announce new February events with YA author Haley Neil and historical fiction writer Marie Benedict. Read on for more!

Laura Zigman, author of Separation Anxiety, presents Small World, a heartfelt novel about two offbeat and newly divorced sisters who move in together as adults—and are finally forced to reckon with their childhood.
"Small World is a treasure: a family story that is wistful one moment, witty and wry the next. Few novelists write as beautifully about the damaged heart and the wounded soul as Laura Zigman, or understand the emotional bonds of siblings and sisters. I loved this novel."
–Chris Bohjalian author
Laura will be in conversation with Joanna Rakoff, author of My Salinger Year and the forthcoming memoir, The Fifth Passenger.

"An in-depth exploration of the complications and bonds of sisterhood. Benedict perfectly captures the anxiety and uncertainty of England's interwar years and serves as a timely reminder of the dangers of enigmatic autocrats. Fast-paced and eye-opening." ―Fiona Davis, author
Please note that this Wellesley Books event will likely take place at an off-site venue. We will keep ticket-holders updated when we know the location.

Bookseller Recommendations

So many noteworthy nuggets in this important book, chief among them that your relationships are essential to feeling satisfied, happy, and secure throughout your life, but especially as we age. For the introverted, socially inept among us (myself included), this book provided a gentle call to action to continue building and/or fostering my relationships with my family members, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.

Kidder has done it again. It's so good to know that there are so many caring people out there. Full of stats and logistics but also the human beings attached to the theories. A part of Boston most of us never see.

In book three of the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series, readers can settle into a cozy story in a second café. Characters new and old grapple with things they wish they had done differently. Will traveling through time put weary souls to rest and provide love and light to those who need it? You'll have to read it to find out--you won't be disappointed!

A sweet story of Nikhil, a gay Indian-American boy--also known as the voice actor of Raj Reddy on a popular cartoon--as he enters eighth grade in a new school across the country. Will puberty mean the end of his career as a child voice actor? What about Raj? A great tale of new friends, family and finding your voice.

Just about the cutest book ever! Look at those li'l fangs! Kids will find a lot to relate to in this story of a fruit bat who's afraid to take her first flight, until she realizes she has everything she needs to succeed. It's also a great introduction to the wonders of bats and to the concept of echolocation. I'm all for kids' books that demystify misunderstood or stigmatized animals, and this is a good one.

What We're Reading Now...
|

River is an eight-year-old rescue who stopped into the bookstore on a dark and stormy night (of which we've had so many, recently). He was found as a stray in Western Massachusetts and is as sweet as can be, though a bit shy until he gets to know you. He's thought to be a Beagle/Lab mix--his stubbornness certainly points to something houndy in his background. Nevertheless, he's a Very Good Boy.
