Third Grade Poets: Diamante Poems

This week, third graders learned how to write diamante poems. This type of poetry is in the shape of a diamond and consists of seven unrhymed lines. Diamantes can either be a synonym or antonym diamante, in which the first and last words have the same or opposite meaning. The entire class worked together to practice an antonym diamante. Together they wrote the following poem. Ms. Schulz, Summit third grade teacher, said, "I love what they came up with!"

Summit History Bowl Teams Bring Home Trophies

Three Summit Upper School teams (two from middle school and one from high school) competed at this year’s History Bowl. The teams, sponsored by Mrs. Emma Smith, US History Teacher, traveled to Morrisville, Missouri to compete against 55 other teams, in the large school division. They answered question from 13 different historical categories including Ancient and Classical Greece, Basketball History, US Presidents, and Imperialism. The Summit had an excellent showing and finish with MS team White in 2nd, MS team Blue in 3rd, and HS team in 5th! Be sure to check out the trophies in The Summit lobby.

Middle School LEGO Robotics: Regional Finals

On Saturday, January 21st, Summit middle schoolers competed at LEGO Robotics Regional Finals, after advancing from the local competition in November. The team arrived in Wentzville, Missouri and were faced with an unexpected challenge when they found out (due to computer compatibility and system upgrade issues) the code they had been working on and perfecting for months… had disappeared.

But what makes these students truly remarkable is that they did not meltdown. They did not blame each other. They did not give up. Instead, they exhibited a growth mindset and went to work to solve their problem. The team rewrote code, made adjustments, worked together, and came up with a solution.

The team did not advance to Nationals, but they their effort and their grit made all the difference to Mr. Powers, Upper School Science teacher and LEGO Team Sponsor. "Really, I don't care [that we didn't win]. I'm so happy with all of the team today... I had a team display character, grit, kindness, and compassion today while overcoming a big challenge. We won! Who cares about the awards," Mr. Powers said. "I'm so proud."
