LESI2022 (May 8-10 in Venice, Italy) is continuing to take shape and has been built around addressing how technology and the business of technology has changed – and why it matters for licensing professionals. We have now announced speakers for the core features of the program. It will include:
- 4 State of the Industry Briefings -- one-hour, industry lead, expert panel discussions addressing the Auto Industry, Health Care, Telecommunications and Energy/Green Tech.
- 16 Concurrent Sessions – continuing the discussing in the state of the industry briefing as well as sessions on Business Strategy/Monetization, Legal/Enforcement Issues, and Successful Tech Transfer.
- 4 keynote addresses – 1 panel on the Entertainment industry + other engaging speakers addressing fashion, tech transfer, and other topics.

Also, LESI’s Kids IP Day (on March 17) where we will be releasing materials you can use in your own communities to share and educate the young people around you on the importance of investing and supporting innovation and the impact on our lives. "Unified Patent Court: a new licensing dynamic will start in 2022 in Europe"

LES France and LES Benelux have joined forces to organize two webinars with the focus on the effects of the unitary patent, and the Unified Patent Court on the licensing world.
In the first session (10 March), renowned experts in the field will set the scene by providing an introduction to the unitary patent system and unified patent court.
- What shall we all know about the UP and the UPC?
- Where are we in the process?
- What needs to be done in your company during the transition phase?
- What are the competences of the courts ? How to litigate in the UPC ? Etc.
In the second session (28 March), implications of the UPC on existing and future licensing deals will be addressed from a practical viewpoint: which typical patent license clauses needs attention? In this second session, there will be an open panel discussion.

"New Breeding Techniques and Genetically Modified Organism Regulation in South Africa"

In 2019, the scope of the South African Genetically Modified Organisms Act 15 of 1997 (‘GMO Act’), as amended by Genetically Modified Organisms Act, 2006 (Act No. 23 of 2006), in relation to new breeding techniques or “NBTs” was explored and recommendations were made. NBTs include many now popular, and commonly used tools for genome editing, including clustered regularly- interspersed short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and the like.
In this presentation, Dr Groenewald will talk through the present requirements and some of the current discussions relating to this legislation.
