High school students attend summer media camps at the J-School

Students from the Native Storytelling Workshop visited Haskell Indian Nations University last week.

The Native Storytelling Workshop and the Jayhawk Media Workshop held summer media camps last week for high school students on the KU campus. It was the inaugural camp for the Native Storytelling Workshop, which strives to teach Native youth how share their voices and stories via journalism and other forms of media. The Jayhawk Media Workshop returned in person after being shut down for the last two years because of the pandemic. Students had opportunities to take courses such as yearbook, broadcasting, photojournalism and leadership.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Professor Hyunjin Seo and her collaborators were awarded a grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission for their interactive art project visualizing the intersection of technology, social justice and art. Seo’s collaborators on the project are Sarah Newman at Harvard University and Joey Orr at Spencer Museum of Art, as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the J-School. This project will culminate with exhibitions at Spencer Museum of Art and Lawrence Public Library in November and December 2022.

Professor Hyunjin Seo, Assistant Professors Jeff Conlin and Vaibhav Diwanji, and doctoral students Annalise Baines, Darcey Altschwager, Matt Blomberg, Ursula Kamanga, Muhammad Ittefaq and Jun Pei are co-authors of the study, “Visuals for Public Health Campaigns: Effects of Visual Modality and Frame in Increasing Vaccination Intentions,” accepted for presentation at the 2022 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference.

Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin served as lead author of "Persuasive Mechanisms and Effects of Narrative Video Political Ads from the 2018 U.S. Midterm Elections on Voter Attitudes,” which was accepted for presentation at the AEJMC's annual conference later this summer. The research earned first place and top paper award in the open paper competition within the AEJMC Advertising Division. Conlin also served as a co-author for “Kids and Cookies: Has YouTube Kidfluencer Content Changed as a Result of FTC Policy Enforcement,” which was also accepted for presentation at the conference within the AEJMC Advertising Division.

Associate Professor Teri Finneman will receive the exceptional service award from the AEJMC History Division in August for her work on behalf of the field of journalism history.

A study by Associate Professor Genelle Belmas and Ph.D. graduate Harrison Rosenthal offers recommendations — based on a high-profile case at the University of Illinois — to prevent misuse of Title IX to make student and university-affiliated journalists required reporters of sexual assault in an attempt to prevent them from reporting on the topic. Assistant Professor Rebekka Schlichting is a recipient of a $37,500 grant from Firelight Media, PBS and the Center for Asian American Media to produce a documentary on the Pawnee Corn Seed Preservation Project. The project is part of a larger initiative called HOMEGROWN: Future Visions , to support emerging filmmakers who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or people of color to tell stories of the American Midwest. Schlichting’s film, tentatively titled “Back to the Land: The Pawnee Corn Seed Preservation Project,” will focus on Pawnee citizens working in Nebraska to build a seed library. Please welcome Leah Kohlman, the new undergraduate recruitment coordinator for the J-School. Leah will be working with Himée Kamatuka on the school's recruitment initiatives. Leah graduated from the University of Kansas in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies and minor in African & African American Studies. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sport Management at KU. In her free time, she loves playing and watching tennis and baking sweet treats for her family, friends and co-workers.

J-School graduate crowned Miss Kansas

Congratulations to Elyse Noe, who was crowned Miss Kansas USA and won the interview award May 8 in Shawnee, Kansas. Noe, who is a member of Alpha Chi Omega and an advocate for victims of sexual abuse, graduated from the J-School last month. She will represent Kansas in the Miss USA 2022 competition this fall.

Mark your calendars for Aug. 21 for the J-School’s Academic Welcome! From 2-4 p.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall, we will celebrate the start of another new school year with games, snacks and prizes. Students can meet professors and other J-School students while learning about all the student organizations and other opportunities to get involved in the school.

The National Sports Media Association Sports Media Convergence Summit is June 26-27 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It features seminars and panels designed to educate students and young professionals. Get the details.
