Our Weekly Message

News, Invitations, and Ministerial Reflections

June 2, 2023

Dear Ones –

Thanks to all who shared their appreciation for my service last week on creativity.  If you missed the service, click here to see the recording.

Today I read an article in the Washington Post that brought back my words from the sermon, “our creativity will save us.” The Post told the story of a women who had been in a mental institution for 20 years, after having been diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 19 and was catatonic – unable to communicate.  A doctor in training had seen her when she had first been admitted, and then by chance reconnected with her 20 years later. Seeing that there was no improvement, he explored her case further and after comprehensive tests he found that she had the auto-immune disease lupus as well. The lupus was untreated. Intrigued, he discussed this situation with colleagues and postulated that lupus might be the cause of her mental illness because it was impacting her brain. After intensive therapy to reduce the impact of the lupus, she was restored to her fully functional self - much to the ecstatic joy of her family.

The doctor then wondered how many patients diagnosed with schizophrenia actually had brain damage from an auto immune disorder? So far they have found 200 people in mental institutions, treated them, and restored their lives.

I am incredibly moved by this story. The doctor used all his creative energies and thought outside the box to make a discovery that changed the lives of hundreds so far, and hopefully many more. His creative efforts will leave a legacy of others as well.

Our creativity will save us, whether through problem solving, imagining, or thinking outside the box.  And it is more powerful when we do it together.

Sending love and wishes for a creative day,

Rev. Lucy

Volunteers needed for the UUSS Pride Booth

June 10 & 11

Plans are coming together for UUSS to have a booth at this year's Sacramento Pride. We will need to staff the booth with volunteers on Saturday, June 10, 12p to 9p, and Sunday, June 11, 12p to 6p.

We will be offering a couple of activities for people who stop by -- a prayer-flag activity and the opportunity to make something with pipe-cleaners and beads.

We need two or three volunteers a time at the table, staffing in hour increments, though longer shifts are certainly encouraged. Starting this week there will be a signup sheet at the Social Justice table in the lobby before and after the service. We would love to see a range of ages among our volunteers, and families are encouraged to sign up.

Note that volunteers will have to buy tickets in advance to get into Pride, but UUSS has offered to give refunds to booth volunteers who file for reimbursement after.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 13-17, and free up to age 12. The link to buy tickets is https://sacramentopride.org/tickets/

If you have any questions, contact Lisa Bunker at pride@uuss.org or (207) 985-2053. Thank you in advance for helping to make our return to Pride a success!

Rev. Roger asks:

Did You Grow Up in a UU Congregation?

For an upcoming service, Rev. Roger would like to hear some of your stories, memories, recollected images or other sensations from growing up UU. Regardless of your age now, what gifts (or burdens) from that experience have you carried in your life?  Email Roger to set up a time to talk or just email him your thoughts and recollections: roger@uuss.org

Joys, Sorrows, and Prayers

Reading & Responding to Poetry with JoAnn Anglin

Monday, June 5, 10:00 am, Zoom

Enter via the UUSS website, as you would attend a service. We meet the first and third Monday mornings. All are welcome to reflect together on a poem. This practice is called Lectio Divina.

For the Lectio Divina on Monday, June 5, we’ll consider The Owl, written by English poet Edward Thomas. Although composed back in 1915, it seems very relevant today. Most of us probably consider ourselves pretty fortunate in our circumstances, yet our literacy, and sense of citizenship, make us aware of the bad luck of others. The poet’s reaction to this can be seen at:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2021/feb/01/poem-of-the-week-the-owl-by-edward-thomas

You are welcome to join our friendly discussion by going to our UUSS website on Monday. Just enter the group the same way you would attend a Zoom Sunday service.

"End of Life Planning" class with Molly Stuart, Three Wednesdays: June 7, 14 & 21 -- 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Fahs Classroom. Please plan to attend all three sessions. Sign up at Connections on Sundays or e-mail molly@mollystuart.com
