Dr. Joseph Martel is fascinated by the eye and retina. The Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh is always awed by the “beautiful view of the retina – through the ophthalmoscope and especially in surgery.”


How a Patient Navigator Helped with Transportation
Ryan Summers* has been vision impaired all his life. He has a detached retina in his left eye and has had three cornea transplants. Once he got the UPMC for Life plan, he started seeing doctors at the UPMC Eye Center. But he almost missed his appointments due to lack of transportation. Thankfully, Patient Navigator Dana McGinnis-Thomas was notified on September 8, and immediately got on the case.


Meet EEF team member Carrie Fogel
Carrie Fogel may have recently expanded her family by two, but she considers the Eye & Ear Foundation a second family. As if juggling newborn twins and a toddler was not enough, she is EEF’s Director of Development for Individual Giving and Foundation Relationships.


Get to Know New Otolaryngology Faculty Member Sandra Stinett

The Voicebox Doctor has joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine as Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Laryngology. Sandra Stinnett, as she is also known, started in November 2021.
