Evergreen Spiral
Last week each of the classes had the opportunity to walk the Evergreen Spiral. Observing this annual tradition, the class enters the space to the sound of soft music and the light of a single candle at the heart of the spiral. One by one each student walks to the center of the spiral, lights their candle and then, as they exit the spiral, they find a spot to place their candle along the path. One candle at a time, the area is filled with light. The experience is a time to pause and reflect and it provides a space to experience how the light we each carry within us can join with others to surround us with warmth and joy.
Seasonal Sing-Along
This past Saturday was the first time the community was invited to an all school event on campus since the start of the pandemic. Gathering on the blacktop in the gloaming of the day, following the luminaries that lit the way, warming ourselves with the fire pit, hot cider, and good cheer, it was a lovely evening and a delight to be able to gather together and sing!

Curricular Conversations with the Community: Beginning in January!
Monday, January 10 at 7pm

You are warmly invited to join faculty members for a "Curricular Conversation with the Community".

The theme in January will be "Social Studies and History in the Middle School" and will be led by the Anti-Racism Curriculum Group. What curriculum does the Waldorf School follow? How does it manifest in the classroom at WWS? What role do diversity, inclusion, equity, social justice, and anti-racism play in how lessons unfold?

Please join us for this "Curricular Conversation" on Monday, January 10 at 7pm (via Zoom).
Book Club is Back!
Join WWS Librarian, Susan Walsh, and others from the community on Zoom in late January to discuss The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Date to be determined.

For information or to join, email Susan Walsh.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates is the most important essayist in a generation and a writer who changed the national political conversation about race with his 2015 memoir, Between the World and Me. So naturally his debut novel comes with slightly unrealistic expectations—and then proceeds to exceed them. The Water Dancer . . . is a work of both staggering imagination and rich historical significance. . . . What’s most powerful is the way Coates enlists his notions of the fantastic, as well as his fluid prose, to probe a wound that never seems to heal. . . . Timeless and instantly canon-worthy.”—Rolling Stone

Retirement Announcement
Lezlie Lawson Retiring this Summer

Lezlie Lawson, our Enrollment Director since the fall of 2006, will retire this summer and leave her position at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. Lezlie has been the welcoming face of WWS for every new family that has come to the school over the last 15 years, and for that alone she has made an enormous contribution to our community. But Lezlie has given far more, and she leaves a huge legacy as well as big shoes to fill. As a long-time core member of our Advancement Committee and College of Teachers, Lezlie has been a leader who has provided invaluable guidance and inspiration to us all. Her enthusiasm for Waldorf education is infectious, as many new families will attest, and her personal warmth and kindness touches everyone she meets. Needless to say, we will miss Lezlie greatly. Luckily, she'll be here for the rest of the school year, during which time she will surely continue her vital work of bringing new families to our community. Many thanks to Lezlie for everything!

The Kendalls live near the SW DC Waterfront, just down the street from the Green Line Waterfront Metro stop.
