We're sending our April email out a few days early so that A) You know this isn't an April Fool's email, and B) To let you know that we'll be closed this Sunday, March 31 (Easter), along with many other businesses in town.
Whether you celebrate Spring with a religious holiday or a simple welcoming of migratory birds and green things, we hope you have a good weekend.
| |
Spring is here, and returning along with the birds and leaves is our author event series. We're really excited about the line-up we're putting together this year. Several of our events are collaborations with other organizations, and we're welcoming some well-known local authors through the spring and summer. We've also got a couple of fun non-author events simmering and we can't wait to share the details with you, once they're fully cooked.
Speaking of cooking, we have a special sale coming up for home cooks and cookbook readers! Keep reading to find out all about what's happening in the bookstore this month.

Are you searching for inspiration in the kitchen? Need to change up the usual rotation of recipes?
Take advantage of our Cookbook sale! All through the month of April, all of the books in our Cookbook section are 15% off. We have an incredible selection - books of cooking basics, baking, culturally inspired recipes, vegan and vegetarion, and much more!

Eclipse! - Special Hours Notice
So, we hear there's going to be a total solar eclipse on April 8th...
As you can see, our Bookstore Bear is modeling proper eclipse watching protection. We have ISO certified viewing glasses for sale, only $2.50 each. We also have copies of the Vermont Total Solar Eclipse Event Guide, which comes with its own pair of viewing glasses.
The eclipse will make its pause over Hardwick around 3:27 p.m. Our current plan is to close the store briefly - between 3:15-3:45 - so that Sandy can step out and experience the phenomenon with the rest of the community.
Here in Hardwick, The Jeudevine Memorial Library is hosting eclipse related programming up to and on the day of the eclipse. Right now, an eclipse-themed Story Walk can be found on Main Street, beginning at the Clip Joint.

April Book Club
Thursday, April 11, 8:30 a.m.
Our April book club choice is the satirical novel, Cold Comfort Farm. Parodying the rural novels of her contemporaries, Stella Gibbons wrote the story of recently orphaned socialite, Flora Poste, as she descends on her relatives at the aptly named Cold Comfort Farm in deepest Sussex and finds a singularly miserable group in dire need of her particular talent: organization.
Newcomers and drop-ins are always welcome at our book club. If you would like to be added to our email list for book club updates, contact Andrea at galaxybookgals@gmail.com.
May's book club choice will be announced at the April meeting.

Thomas Christopher Greene
at the Jeudevine Memorial Library
Tuesday, April 16, 7:00 p.m.
Join us at the Jeudevine Memorial Library for an evening with Montpelier author Thomas Christopher Greene, discussing his new book of essays, Notes From the Porch: Tiny True Stories to Make You Feel Better About the World.
Greene wrote these pieces during the Covid-19 lockdown, observing his neighbors from his writing desk on his porch and reminiscing about events from his life to that point. Mixing poignancy, humor, and a sharp eye for human nature, this collection is a delight, and we are excited to partner with the Jeudevine Library to bring the author to Hardwick.

Books to Look for in April
Here's a small sample of what's coming to our shelves this month.
| |
Staff Recommendation: Table for Two, by Amor Towles - I guess it is official now that Amor Towles cannot write a wrong word. Everything is just perfect and wonderful from his pen/mind/imagination. He is a keen observer of people and writes people - again and again - with such subtle and spot-on observations and warmth. Loved everything about this collection and fans of his other books will not be disappointed. - Andrea |
|
Staff Recommendation: Clear, by Carys Davies - The last inhabitant of a remote Scottish island discovers human connection across the divide of language. Spare as its rugged landscape, a story rich in language and kindness. - Chris
Staff Recommendation: The Husbands, by Holly Gramazio - I adored this book! Very funny, original, and surprisingly thought-provoking - I couldn't put it down and have been telling everyone about it. Loved it! - Vanessa |
