New Georgetown Program Synergizes Interdisciplinary Training in the Sciences The National Institutes of Health has awarded Georgetown University a highly competitive and prestigious training grant intended to invigorate the workforce and inspire students from diverse backgrounds to pursue doctoral degrees in the biomedical sciences.

Georgetown’s New CAPS Director on Her Vision, Out-of-the-Box Thinking and Advice for 2022 Durriya Meer, PhD, a licensed psychologist with more than 20 years of experience in higher education counseling and psychology, has joined Georgetown as the new director of Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS).

Public Health and University Operations While Georgetown University will return to in-person instruction on January 31, certain temporary public health measures will continue. Upcoming Booster Shot Clinics COVID-19 booster shot clinics will be held in the Georgetown Student Health Center (on the ground floor of Darnall Hall next to Epicurean) on Thursday, February 3 and Friday, February 11, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Please register in advance.

COVID-19 PCR Testing for Children (<5 years old) of Georgetown Employees Starting January 31, Georgetown will offer PCR testing to children under the age of 5 of full-time benefits-eligible employees. More information, including directions for how to set your child up to get tested, can be found on the COVID-19 Testing for Children of Employees page.

February 7 Event with Facebook Whistleblower to Address Impact of Social Media on Teen Health Child and adolescent mental health experts from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Health Studies will host a conversation with Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager turned whistleblower, on the impact of social media on teen mental health. The event will be held on February 7 at 3:00 p.m. via livestream. Georgetown University faculty, students and staff may register here.

Adjunct Nursing Professor Receives Award from National Nursing Ethics Conference  Liz Stokes, JD, MA, RN, adjunct professor of nursing, will receive the 2022 Ethics of Caring Nursing Ethics Leadership Award at the National Nursing Ethics Conference in March. Stokes is director of the American Nurses Association Center for Ethics and Human Rights. During the pandemic, she has been committed to providing accessible ethics education and she has championed the needs of all nurses and frontline caregivers.

Hoya Hub Food Pantry Located in the Leavey Center The Hoya Hub food pantry, stocked with non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products, is available to any Georgetown University community member (undergraduate or graduate student, staff or faculty member) experiencing food insecurity. Located on the 4th floor of the Leavey Center in room 418, the pantry is secured with a punch code lock. The code to the lock can be found here - the survey questions are voluntary and optional. Assistance Available to Support Work with Research Participants with Limited English Proficiency The Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (GHUCCTS) is offering assistance to research teams for the inclusion of people with limited English proficiency in research. Such support may include funds for language translation and interpretation (T&I) when not supported by the existing study grant, T&I expert referrals and technical assistance. Contact Kathryn Turner or Florencia Gonzalez for a no-cost consultation.

Expanded PLOS Open Access Author Support from Dahlgren Memorial Library Thanks to a partnership between Dahlgren Memorial Library and the Public Library of Science (PLOS), author publication fees for all PLOS journals will be waived for GUMC students, faculty, researchers and staff, as well as employees of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Authors should state their affiliation with GUMC when submitting a paper and within their ORCID profile to benefit from this agreement. Email dmlresources@georgetown.edu with any questions.

Last Call: RADIANCE Grant Proposals Due January 31 at 5:00 p.m. The newly launched RADIANCE (Respect, Advocacy, Diversity, Inclusion, ANti-racism, Collaboration, Equity) Grants program in the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs aims to contribute to a culture of respect, inclusion and belonging through strategies that promote advocacy, diversity, anti-racism, collaboration and/or equity.
