In the meantime, Beijing has successfully hosted the Olympic Winter Games, where Austrian athletes were able to achieve extraordinary results. Now, all the focus of the Austrian business community is on AUSTRIA CONNECT China 2022 conference, which will take place on April 21-23 in Beijing.
The conference, which was postponed last autumn due to Covid restrictions, is the most important networking event for Austrian business community in China. This year’s AUSTRIA CONNECT will highlight the challenges and chances for Austrian companies resulting from China’s 14th Five Year Plan. Being an on-site event, we expect more than 100 CEOs, managing directors and local representatives of Austrian companies to participate in this high-level event.

FRANZ KLAMMER LEGEND INSPIRES THE FILM AND SPORTS INDUSTRY IN CHINA
On the occasion of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022, the Austrian Consulate General and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Shanghai hosted two screening events for the film “Klammer – Chasing the Line”. The movie as well as the Q&A with the Austrian ski champion Franz Klammer encouraged discussions about future Sino-Austrian cooperation among the 70 guests from both, the film and the winter sports industry.
The movie “Klammer – Chasing the Line” is a romantic sports biopic set in the Austrian Alps of the 70ies and deals with the legendary downhill run of Mr. Franz Klammer at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. The true story of the red-white-red ski athlete, who remains the most successful World Cup downhill racer of all times.

AUSTRIA'S ECONOMY REMAINS CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC
The Austrian economy was showing signs of cautious optimism as 2022 began. After a significant gross domestic product increase of almost 5% in 2021, analysts from UniCredit Bank Austria also anticipate a similar strong economic growth in 2022. Private consumption in particular is set to become a powerful growth driver this year, fueled by the marked improvement in the situation on the labour market and greater certainty about health policy. However, the continued high rate of inflation could increasingly prove to be a sticking point. Also, supply bottlenecks might continue to last over the next months. The economists at UniCredit Bank Austria expect economic growth in Austria to be above average in 2023 too, with a GDP increase of 3%.

AUSTRIAN WINTER FEELING IN CHENGDU
Austria is not only a famous destination for tourism and winter sports but also the origin of many cutting-edge technologies in the tourism and winter sports industries. At two tourism and winter sports events in Chengdu organized by the Austrian Consulate General in Chengdu, the Austrian National Tourism Office and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Chengdu, a diverse group of Austrian enterprises exhibited their products and technologies to the local audience.
The curious guests were able to see for themselves high-quality skis from brands such as HEAD, ATOMIC and Blizzard and gained insights into cutting-edge technologies such as those from AST, Axess, Doppelmayr and Wintersteiger.

Uncertainty remains but commitment to future investments in China have once again reached pre-Covid levels. Two years Covid-19 pandemic and three years of the Sino-US trade conflict have taken their toll on Austrian businesses and added further complexity to the Chinese market. The general mood is damp and the outlook over the next few months remains uncertain. China’s ongoing self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world - with no end in sight – is starting to negatively affect businesses. However, there is a silver lining on the horizon.
