What We've Been Up To

Dream the Impossible Native Youth Conference

On Saturday, April 29th, UC San Diego and the ITRC hosted Dream the Impossible Native Youth Conference, which brought over Native youth (ages 12 to 19) from all across Indian country to attend workshops on college readiness, culture, health and wellness, and prevention. The Conference was a huge success, with a turnout of over 400 people! We thank all our volunteers who helped out the day of the conference and the Dream the Impossible Planning Committee for making this happen at UCSD!

UC San Diego 12th Annual Powwow

On Saturday, May 20th, 2023, UC San Diego held our 12th Annual Powwow. With over 200 attendees, the Native American community on and off campus came together to share this special day. There were various vendors selling hand-made jewelry, clothing, snacks, and frybread from Kumeyaay Frybread. We thank all our volunteers who helped out the day of the powwow and the Powwow Planning Committee for making this amazing event happen! We would also like to give a special shout-out to Tomas DeCrane (Crow, Navajo), seen below, who designed this year's powwow poster!

Antikoni: A Staged Reading and Conversation by Beth Piatote

UCSD students in the TDHT120-ETHN163G Indigenous Theatre and Performance course have cordially invited us to join them for Beth Piatote's showing of Antikoni. The play runs from 12pm to 3pm on June 15th, 2023 at the Arthur Wagner Theatre at UCSD's Galbraith Hall Room 157. The staged reading and discussion of this show are directed by Cambria Herrera (MFA directing) and the students of the TDHT120-ETHN163G course taught by Julie Burelle.

About the Playwright: Beth Piatote is a Ni:mi:pu: (Nez Perce) scholar and author. She is a member of Chief Joseph’s Tribe and the Colville Confederated Tribes.

About the Play: In this modern, haunting adaptation of Sophocles’ classic tragedy, Antigone, a Native American family is torn apart as they struggle over the fate of ancestral remains and their conflicting loyalties to different notions of tradition, law, and the price of sacrifice.
