The Baptismal Covenant: Lenten Reflections 2023

Welcome to our new series, The Baptismal Covenant: Lenten Reflections 2023! Each weekend during Lent, Bishop Doug will do a brief teaching on a portion of The Baptismal Covenant and invite your reflection. You may even notice the font from your faith community in the videos!

Here's an outline of the next six weeks.

Each weekend during Lent, a new video will be posted to a special series page on our website, to social media (FacebookTwitterInstagram, and LinkedIn), and on YouTube. Don't miss them!

Below is our video for the Second Sunday in Lent.

New Diocesan Missioner

Grace and peace be with you in Jesus, the Light for all people!

I have good news to share with you. We have a new missioner...Joe Anand-Obleton, who has agreed to serve as a Missioner to assist with Administration and Special Projects.

He currently serves as the Assistant to Dean Brian for Administration and works Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 to 1:30. His hours for the diocese will be Monday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and perhaps several additional hours during the rest of the week.

The amount of work ebbs and flows especially in the area of administration. Canon Michelle and I met with Joe and it is our hope to be able to identify those particular tasks which we can direct to Joe...from visitation planning to licensing...as an example.

Please, as you are able, welcome Joe as a missioner, serving our wonderful siblings in the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana!

Every blessing,

Bishop Doug (he/him/his)

Creation Care Grants

The Episcopal Church Office of Creation Care announces the opening of the 2023 Creation Care grant funding cycle, with applications—available in English and Spanish—being accepted for local and regional eco-ministry projects until 5 p.m. ET May 1.

An informational webinar to learn more about the grant process and ask questions is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET March 14. Register online—or view the webinar later on-demand.

Overseen by the church’s Task Force on Creation Care and Environmental Racism, Creation Care grants seek to support eco-ministry projects that address climate change, environmental degradation, and the inequitable and systemic impacts of environmental racism. The grant committee is interested in supporting programs that go beyond secular environmental work to provide resources for faith-based community organizing and theological reflection.

Projects that support The Episcopal Church in reaching the goal of net carbon neutrality by 2030 will be favorably considered, along with projects that develop climate change resiliency.

Escaping the Whale, Queen, and Valley: Healing and Understanding the Suicidal Crisis

Date: March 6, March 23, March 20, March 27, April 3

Time: 7:30-9 p.m. (ET)

Where: Zoom

What if we told you that the usual thinking about suicide in the Bible is wrong? This six-part Bible study will dive deep into several classic Hebrew Scripture events to uncover an innovative approach to suicide ideation and crisis. Using the stories from Jonah, Elijah, Ezekiel, and the Psalms, we will see the lives of these crucial individuals anew when they were in despair and darkness. We will also discover how God returned them to a place of light, love, and hope.

With the support of a dedicated website, you will engage the text in compelling ways. Each session will explore a biblical text. Afterward, we will engage in a lively discussion, allowing you to ask relevant questions and consider new ways to help people amid mental health crises. By the end of our study, you will be armed with biblical texts and tools to reframe your thoughts about suicide and the Bible.

Register to receive your personal link and reminders

All those who register will receive reminders and materials. Because of the sensitive nature of the conversation, these sessions will not be recorded. Come when you are able to participate in this new resource.
