Research and Sponsored Programs Update

The Central California Research Symposium is returning to Fresno State’s Madden Library.
After going virtual last spring, the event is set to return with in-person presentations at the Library on Weds., April 20, 2022. Entering its 43rd year, the Symposium serves as a forum to showcase excellence in scholarly research and creative activity conducted by students across all academic disciplines.
The Call for Abstracts is now available online, with all applications due by Weds., Feb. 23. Applicants are invited to choose one of the following formats: 12-minute oral presentation, poster presentation or 3-Minute Thesis oral presentation. Each student may submit only one application as a lead author.
Faculty: Please encourage students to apply. Note that all faculty mentors will be required to electronically approve applicants prior to acceptance. If you have any questions, contact event coordinator Kim Camarena at kcamarena@csufresno.edu.

Cory Brooks (Chemistry) received funding from Quest Pharmatech Inc. (OncoQuest) for his project, “Purification of GST-MUC1 Protein.”
|
|
- Candace Egan (MCJ) received funding to produce the video pilot of the cooking series "Jul's Armenian Kitchen,” with host Julianne Burk.
- Aimee Jacobs (ISDS) received funding from the UK Academy for Information Systems for her project, “TikTok as a blended learning tool.”

Mabel Franks (Welty Center) received a $60,000 grant from the Clovis Unified School District to conduct the evaluation for the third year of the District’s Climate Transformation Program.

Devendra Sharma (Communication) received a grant from the Hewlett 50 Arts Commission to present a nautanki folk opera, which will be the largest ever staged in the United States.
- Barbara Foster (DSWE) received a $21,632 grant from Merced County for the County’s Peer Review and County Self-Assessment program.
- Oscar Vega (Mathematics) received a $13,700 grant from San Jose State University (NSF Passthrough) for his project, “Undergraduate Research Groups in the CSU Alliance for PUMP: Preparing Undergraduate through Mentoring towards PhDs.”

Kalyani Maitra (Chemistry), recipient of the 2020-21 Claude C. Laval Jr. Award for Innovative Technology and Research award, presented her research project on "A Sustainable Approach: Algae in freshwater treatment and a viable food source" at an on-campus event on Dec. 10.

- Jacob Wenger (Plant Science) received the ECP Teaching Award from the Entomological Society of America at its annual conference in Denver.

Keith Putirka and John Wakabayashi (Earth and Environmental Sciences), Stuart McFeeters (Geography and City and Regional Planning) and Youngwook Kim (Electrical and Computer Engineering) were included in Elsevier's Data Digital Commons’ listing of the top 100,000 most cited science researchers.
- Gurreet Brar (Plant Science) translated a book from English to Punjabi, “When The Rivers Run Dry.” Authored by Fred Pearce, the book is about the looming water crisis globally.
- Daniel Cunningham (Mathematics) has signed a contract with De Gruyter to publish his latest book, "Mathematical Logic: An Introduction."

Jonathan T. Pryor (Educational Leadership) served as co-author of an article in the latest issue of Innovative Higher Education, “Conceptualizing Digital Campus Climate within LGBTQ+ Resource Center Websites: A Critical Discourse Analysis.”

NETWORKING AND GRANT WRITING OPPORTUNITIES
|
The California Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Social Science Advancement (CAHSSA) is launching a series of new opportunities in 2022-24 for social, behavioral and economic sciences faculty, in the UC and CSU systems to forge cross-institution research networks and collaborations and to develop grant proposal writing skills.
CAHSSA is funded by a Build and Broaden grant from the National Science Foundation; its objective is to help social science faculty, especially at Hispanic-serving institutions, obtain external funding for their research and scholarly activities. Among the highlights:
● Virtual webcasts on a variety of topics with networking opportunities
● Virtual grant writing peer groups
● In-person writing retreats for collaborative projects

The Fresno State Transportation Institute (FSTI) has received seed grant funding through the California State University Transportation Consortium (CSUTC) to further transportation research and training on campus. For the new year, FSTI will allocate a total of $10,000 for transportation innovation projects and $40,000 for transportation research projects led by Fresno State faculty.

President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval announced the consolidation of Fresno State’s water research, education and external collaboration efforts under a single, restructured California Water Institute (CWI).

- Danny Kim (History) wrote an article for the Fresno Bee on the popular show "Squid Game" and how it resonates with those who face financial worries.
- Katy Estill Tarrant (Poultry Science) discussed animal welfare, labeling and challenges related to the California poultry industry with Iowa State poultry science students while attending a recent conference there on animal genetics and genomics.
- Helle Petersen (Water, Energy and Technology Center) was a featured guest on the weekly webinar series, “Webinar Wednesday,” focusing on opportunities available to small business owners in Kern County.

Yoshiko Takahashi (COSS) was interviewed about a new five-year grant to support Asian American and Pacific Islander students preparing for a career in criminology.

The Fresno State Plant Science Club recently won the President's Trophy national title at the SARES national conference in Salt Lake City.

Keith Putirka (EES) was profiled in a recent issue of Campus News: "Research allows me to learn new things and to involve students in what I hope are meaningful experiences."

On Nov. 18, research administrator Gayle Sherwood participated in a virtual workshop with the College of Arts and Humanities’ Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Committee and discussed everything from the basics of applying for external grant opportunities to budgeting.
