"It's All the Main Road"

Do you find sadness is an interruption in your life? In her book "Bittersweet" author Susan Cain encourages us to instead see sadness as an integral part of life which opens paths to connection and creativity. At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we'll reflect on the importance of honoring sadness in our lives.

"A Sense of Beauty"

What does it mean to have a sense of beauty in a time when all feels ugly? How can we make ourselves vulnerable to beauty's deep message to strengthen our spiritual selves and our sense
of call in the world?

February's Potluck Bingo Night
Last Friday’s potluck dinner rolled right into a rousing night of bingo. Mark Handschuh was the maestro and Catherine Brooks filled in for Vanna White of "Wheel of Fortune." With generous sharing by the top winners, all 11 folks won prizes.

Future game nights may be planned. Let us know if you might join in.
Potluck Hosts Needed
March's potluck falls on St. Patrick's Day this year and we need a host (hosts are also needed for April 21 & May 19). Please consider hosting a potluck and sign up on the whiteboard. If you have any questions, please contact Diane Shields dashdiane@gmail.com.

Further details about the St. Patrick's Day Potluck will be available at a later date. Stay tuned.

Fun in the Morning
and Evening Too!

Start cleaning your cupboards and thinking of treasures you can donate to UUCR! Do you know of friends, family, neighbors, or businesses that may also be willing to donate goods, gift cards, services, etc.? Please ask them to help make this fundraiser a resounding success.

Your “more humble” objects will be perfect for our Yard Sale, which will be held the morning of April 29. Please contact Lynn Dolinger lynn.thirdwise@gmail.com, or Linda Dutton dutton.linda@gmail.com, with questions. (We won’t start collecting these until closer to April 29.)

Your finer objects will be most welcome at our Silent Auction. And, of course, we seek as many “services” (lessons, meals, excursions, services, happenings, hikes, etc.) for our Live Auction as we can get. Questions? Ideas? Donations? Please contact Darlene Wiggers, auction coordinator at uuofchesterriver@gmail.com or UUCR phone: 410.778.3440.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Jane Hardy's unexpected surgery, Darlene Wiggers (UUCR's Office Administrator) will be filling in this year as the auction coordinator. Please contact Darlene for all things auction related.
Auction Food & Drink
Coordinator Needed

We need a food and drink coordinator for the auction evening on April 29; this will entail getting others to bring hors d’oeuvres and beverages, then setting up tables on the evening of the event.

Please contact Darlene Wiggers, auction coordinator at uuofchesterriver@gmail.com if you can help.
Winding Up the
Pledge Campaign Soon!

The Stewardship Team hopes that you will consider the value of UUCR in your life, put pen to paper, and send in your form today! In two and a half weeks, we have achieved 47% of our goal towards next year's budget. The budget supports the music that opens our hearts, the minister and speakers that open our minds, the staff that pulls all the threads together, the building and grounds that house us, and all the work of our committees that reach into the community.

In preparation for our Stewardship Invitation in the February 5th kick off service, Catherine took an informal survey of those attending asking what was important to them about UUCR. The responses included how it felt like home, a sanctuary, and a community.

We await your commitment of support in gratitude,

Your Stewardship Team — Jackie Mathwich, Chair, Catherine Brooks, Joy Kim, and Peggy McKee
UUCR Social Justice Outreach Collection for February 2023
Black History is celebrated all year long but highlighted in February. In honor of our ongoing work and local relationships, your Social Justice Committee has chosen Sumner Hall to be the recipient of our February Outreach Collection. We hope you generously support them throughout the month. Please send, or give, a check to the church office made out to "UUCR" and specifying "Sumner Hall" in the memo line, or donate online at the UUCR website using the "Donate" button (click here) and "Custom Amount," specifying "Sumner Hall" in the comment section. Please make your donation before February 28. Any questions, please contact Gayle Folger, co-chair of the SJ committee or the church office.
Kent County Food Pantry Items Needed
The Community Food Pantry is still in need of personal care items and some specific food supplies. Please consider contributing to this essential community service. Some of the items requested include soaps, toothbrushes, shampoos, toilet paper, disinfectants, and deodorant. Food items include coffee, olive oil, and vinegar. Please check the Social Justice bulletin board in the UUCR lobby for a complete list of needed items. Donated items can be deposited in the bin located outside the RE Room. Thanks so much for your consideration!

A Bill to Support for
Maryland's Environment
While much of abating global warming involves technologies many of us find too technical, there are also simple ways to address the issue — by making our homes more efficient. The Empower Maryland program has been doing that since 2008 and now needs renewal and re-funding. Those measures are included in the Energy Savings Act (House Bill 904 and Senate Bill 689), for which we are now asking you to contact the District 36 legislators below. Make it as brief as you like.

District 36 Delegates
     Chair, Jay Jacobs - 410.841.3449
            jay.jacobs@house.state.md.us
     Jeff Ghrist - 410.841.3555, 800.492.7122 X3555
            jeff.ghrist@house.state.md.us
     Steve Arentz - 410.841.3543, 800.492.7122 X3543
            steve.arentz@house.state.md.us

District 36 Senator
     Stephen Hershey - 410.841.3639, 800.492.7122 x3639
            steve.hershey@senate.state.md.us

Some Background

The Empower program has performed energy audits, and with residents’ approval, added insulation, sealed air leaks, and tuned up furnaces, heat pumps and water heaters. And it has
done these services for free or rebated for households with low and moderate incomes.

In large part due to this program, per capita electric usage in the state was 15 percent lower than in 2007 by the end of 2014. Marylanders continue to consume two percent less power per
person each year. State officials report these efficiencies benefited the environment the same as taking two million cars off the road for 12 months.

In the revision of the program sought by the UU Legislative Ministry, Sierra Club, and League of Conservation Voters, services would no longer be provided to troubled fossil-fueled HVAC systems or natural gas stoves. Funds would be available for converting to electric heat and appliances. If you feel this restriction is too strict, then tell legislators you want that part modified, but otherwise support the bill. Weatherization upgrades like insulation would still be covered.

Locking Mailbox to Secure Items
We now have a wall-mounted, locking mailbox in the office for you to deposit any checks, monies, or confidential notes/documents instead of leaving them out on the desk where they may get lost. The slot under the lid is capable of handling 12.5 x .75 in documents. If you need to drop something off outside of regular UUCR office hours, please begin placing things in the mailbox. It is located between the file cabinets and the bookcase. Thanks!
Pastoral Care and Connection
You are encouraged to share your joys and sorrows with the UUCR Pastoral Associates (see below). This team is a mixed group — but all have had previous life experiences and a variety of professional training in counseling and philosophy. Please contact one, or several of us, if you “want to talk.”

Gayle Folger, Nancy Holland, and Vida Morley
