Pre-Certificate of Qualification Course (Pre - C of Q)

This course is a review of subjects covered in apprentice trade school. It has successfully prepared apprentices to challenge the C of Q exam and earn the Sheet Metal Worker license. Fifth-year apprentices are especially encouraged to take this course. To earn a Sheet Metal Worker license, an apprentice must achieve at least a 70% mark on the Ministry’s C of Q exam.


Course Options:


1. Full course lasts about 10-14 weeks


   One night per week


   Minimum 8 participants required

 

2. Small class either one-on-one or


   maximum five-on-one


   Focus will be on an apprentice’s



   Individual needs

BASIC MATH

This course is designed for apprentices wishing to build on their math skills prior to day school. Journeypersons may also wish to take it as a refresher. Fractions, algebra, trigonometry and other subjects will be covered.

HEALTH AND SAFETY COURSES

These courses will provide students with the confidence to discuss and manage safety issues at their workplaces. Local 30 has been a leader in promoting health and safety training in the construction industry. Safety training is a key component of any productive workplace. 

Health and Safety Level 1

This course will instruct on:


Current Ontario Safety Regulations

GHS WHMIS Regulations and Labels

Designated Substances

Personal Protective Equipment

Health and Safety Level 2 Law

This course will teach participants about their rights and responsibilities under current safety legislation. Participants will learn best practices for documenting safety concerns.

One night per week or weekend sessions available

Pre-requisite: Health & Safety Level 1

Health and Safety Level 2 Committee

Participants will learn:

The structure and function of health & safety committees

When committees are required

The legal rights and responsibilities of employers and workers

Duration: Full certificate course in two parts lasting approximately 30 hours

Prerequisite: Health & Safety Level 1

Health and Safety Basic Certification

The Occupational Health & Safety Act requires at least one member of the group representing workers on a joint health & safety committee to be “certified.” The same applies for the group representing management.

 

Course information:

Duration: Full certificate course in two parts lasting approximately 30 hours

This course offers open discussion as well as video presentations and great speakers. Participants will have the opportunity to share their stories and experiences about the value of their union.

Is Welding Your Thing?

Obtaining and renewing your welding certifications makes you an asset to our industry. You can increase your work opportunities and extend your current employment. Through the Provincial Training Trust Fund (PTTF) Local 30 offers certifications, renewals and basic welding to eligible members. To take a welding class please follow these steps:

WELDING COURSE OPTIONS:

Basic Welding

Local 30 Training Centre Only


This course is a General Information and Practice Course available to any member who is interested in learning the basics of welding.

 

Safe working practices and procedures for these welding operations will be examined in detail as welds are deposited in the flat and horizontal positions.




Members will learn the processes required to cut, weld, and produce welded T plates on mild steel using GMAW (MIG). 


Intermediate Welding Local 30 Training Centre Only


This course is a certified, ticketed course available to any member who is interested in continuing their education to the intermediate level.

 



In this course, you’ll be able to earn  the following certificates:

 


CWB- All Position Stick

CWB- Flat, Horizontal MIG

AWS- Thin Gage MIG

Advanced Welding

This course is a certified, ticketed course that will be available to any member who is interested in continuing to the Advanced level of welding, GTAW. (TIG)

TIG - Tungsten Inert Gas

This course will enable students to acquire TSSA certification.

 

Duration: Up to 60 hours depending on skill level.

MIG - Metal Inert Gas or Stick Welding - Shielded Metal Arc Welding


This course will enable students to challenge the CWB procedures in all positions.

High Pressure Pipe Course


This course will cover Safety, TIG setup, GTAW and SMAW theory, and welding procedure specifications.

 

Duration: Up to 60 hours depending on skill level.

Pre-requisite: TIG and Stick experience a necessity to enable the student to challenge the TSSA procedures:

G3 Gas Fitters License


Through the PTTF, Local 30 offers an entry level Gas Technician certificate course. To take a G3 Gas course follow these steps:

1.     Have your employer e-mail Derek Maclachlan at dmaclachlan@smwia-l30.com with a request for G3 Gas training.


2.     Find a training facility that offers the G3 Course and register for the course.


3.     Once registered, contact the Union Hall and request a G3 Attendance Record, which must be signed by the instructor for each class.


4.     Forward a copy of the receipt of tuition fee paid in full to the Local 30 Education Committee.



Members will be reimbursed 30% of the tuition upon proof of the course fee being paid. An additional 30% of the tuition will be reimbursed halfway through the course with proof of 85% attendance (submit signed attendance record). The final 40% will be reimbursed upon successful completion or proof of 85% attendance for the entire course.


Parliamentary Procedure


Parliamentary procedures are the body of rules and customs governing meetings and other operations of clubs, organizations, legislative bodies and other deliberative assemblies. General principles of parliamentary procedure include the rule of the majority with respect for the minority.

 

Course information:


Length of course - 3 hours



Minimum 8 participants required.


Plasma course


This course will provide a fundamental understanding of the history, use and production value of a CNC plasma cutting table. 


The participants will learn a brief history of the machinery, followed by discussion and discovery of component parts as well as their functions.

 

This course will also feature a design and practical element.  


During the design section, participants will layout an ornamental 3D object. Through this process participants will learn common terminology as well as develop and enhance computer skills related to the use of this machinery.


This course concludes with the designed elements being imported, nested, cut and then formed in a group exercise.
