Hello Longhorn Family!

It’s time to learn more about the next steps that you and your student will take during the Longhorn journey! With registration for both New Student Orientation and Family Orientation open, we are excited to get you and your student in a 'Longhorn State of Mind' this summer!

In the coming months, your student will receive important information from the University via email. In this issue of Next Steps, we will go over the process for having your student verify their email address to ensure they are best prepared to receive all of the necessary information.

Your Longhorn’s health is a top priority and there are a variety of measures in place to ensure their health and well-being. One of these is the Immunization and Medical Clearance Requirements, documentation students must submit in order to prevent having an H-Hold, which would prevent them from registering for classes at orientation.

In our first newsletter, we introduced you to University Housing and Dining, including details about the housing application process and the helpful "Help Me Choose Housing Quiz". Who your student lives with is just as important, if not more so, than where they live. Keep reading to find out what's next in the housing process after your student receives their housing contract: roommate selection.

Family Orientation

Action Items:

Registration is now open for all Family Orientation sessions. If you haven't already, register for Family Orientation. IMPORTANT- student and family orientation programs require separate registration systems.

The goal of Family Orientation is to make this big campus feel smaller and to provide you with the resources you need to help your student successfully transition from high school to the first day of the fall semester.

The one-day program, hosted by New Student Services, has a robust schedule that includes presentations from campus partners, your student's college/school and current UT students and families. At the day's conclusion, you'll go home feeling more connected to the university and equipped with information to better support your student in this exciting transition.

Below are some highlights that you can look forward to:

College/School Meeting

Families will get the opportunity to hear from their student's college/school. Topics include a general overview of academic expectations and an introduction to college/school-specific resources available to your student. Families will attend the presentation with the college/school of their students' admittance.

Parent & Student Panels

Families will have the opportunity to hear from parent volunteers and students leaders who will share insights and experiences on what it is like to be a parent of a Longhorn or a UT student.

Campus Resources

Families will attend five choice sessions that offer information on campus resources available to their students. A few examples include University Health Services, Financial Aid, Campus Safety & Security and University Housing and Dining.

Campus Tours

Campus tours will be offered to families throughout the afternoon. Friendly reminder that campus tours involve walking outside, so please bring a water bottle and comfortable shoes.

New Student Orientation

Action Items:

Registration is now open for all New Student Orientation sessions. If they haven't already, encourage your student to register for New Student Orientation. Space is limited and filled on a first come, first served basis. IMPORTANT- student and family orientation programs require separate registration systems.

The goal of New Student Orientation is to ensure incoming students are informed about academic and campus resources, understand how to get involved and connect with the campus community, and learn about information that can help with a successful transition to UT. New Student Orientation is mandatory for all incoming students with sessions offered in May, June, July and August. Not all colleges/schools participate in each session.

New Student Orientation is divided into two parts: pre-orientation Canvas modules and on-campus orientation. Approximately 10 calendar days before your student’s orientation session, they will receive an email from New Student Services alerting them that their pre-orientation Canvas modules are available. The modules are self-guided and will take approximately 3 hours to complete. Students do not need to complete the modules all at once, but must complete them before arriving for their on-campus orientation session.

Students are required to stay on campus for the duration of their orientation session. Housing will be provided in the Jester Center Residence Halls. If you need to plan travel to Austin, we have more information on our website.

Here are a few highlights your student can look forward to when they join us on the Forty Acres for their orientation session:

Academic Information

Students will attend a meeting with their specific college/school, where they will learn more about requirements, expectations and degree plans. They will also meet individually with an academic advisor who will go over their course schedule and talk about their specific degree plan to help map out a sample schedule of fall classes.

Campus Resources

Students will have the opportunity to attend many programs that will introduce them to the resources available on campus. Examples include sessions on the transition to college academics, as well as health and well-being services.

Student Org Fair

Students will have a chance to meet current students and learn about the student organizations on campus. Student orgs are a great way for your student to explore interests outside their academic major, make new friends or find a new passion.

Social Programs

The social programs are a great time for students to meet their classmates from different academic programs and form friendships. Orientation advisors and UT staff lead large and small-group activities like traditions night, silent disco, bowling, trivia and so much more to help students engage and unwind.

Class Registration

New Student Orientation concludes with students registering for their first term of classes. They will have until midnight that day to make any changes. Afterwards, they won't be able to make adjustments to their schedule until the add/drop period in late-July. In some classes, seats will be reserved so that students in each orientation session have a chance to register for those classes. No matter which session your student participates in, there will be classes they can register for that will fulfill their degree requirements and keep them on track for graduation.

Orientation Advisors

Each year, New Student Services interviews, hires and trains talented students to be Orientation Advisors, or OAs as they’re commonly called. Our OAs assist in the development and execution of New Student Orientation programs, and have a significant impact on incoming students as they are among the first people that students will meet in their Longhorn journey!

Pre-Orientation Checklist

Encourage your student to use the Pre-Orientation Checklist to prepare for orientation. There are items for them to complete each month leading into the fall term. To review these items, send your Longhorn to newstudentservices.utexas.edu.

Immunization and Medical Clearance Requirements

To ensure the health and well-being of all Longhorns, all incoming first-year, transfer and readmitted students must comply with the immunization and medical clearance requirements prior to registering for classes. For information on requirements, acceptable documentation, where to get vaccines, exemptions, how to submit your documentation and documentation processing, visit healthyhorns.utexas.edu.

Additionally, Healthyhorns staff will be in attendance at all of the Family Orientation sessions. Plan to attend their presentation on student health and well-being to learn more about the services provided by University Health Services, the Counseling and Mental Health Center and the Longhorn Wellness Center.

Verify Student Email

Your Longhorn will receive informative emails from UT throughout the coming months, so it is important that your student ensures the email address listed in their Student Record is valid and one that they will have continued access to (i.e., an email address that will not expire). If needed, they should update their email address to one that they will have access to throughout the summer. To do so, they can follow the steps below:

  • Go to my.utexas.edu
  • On the left-hand side, click on 'PERSONAL INFO'
  • From the drop-down menu, click 'My Addresses'
  • In the section labeled 'Student Records - Email Address', change email here
  • Once the new email is entered, click on 'Update This Address" in this section

Once a valid email is saved, be sure that your Longhorn check that inbox at least weekly in an effort to not miss any campus or orientation messages.

The Texas Parents staff keep the site full of resources, whether you have a prospective, incoming, transfer or undergraduate student. If you don't find what you're looking for, you can reach out to the Texas Parents office. The staff are in place to know campus and to connect you with resources that help you help your student. If you don't know whom to call, call Texas Parents – they know the Forty Acres and are happy to pass that knowledge on to you.

Traditions Corner

For nearly a century, the UT Tower has been the academic symbol and architectural emblem of The University of Texas at Austin. The Tower stands as an icon of UT excellence, community and spirit. Since the 1930s, it has been lit in a combination of orange and white light to celebrate occasions and honors including commencement, athletics victories and academic achievements. At the time it opened in 1937, the 307-foot-tall Tower was the only structure that competed with the Texas Capitol dome on the Austin skyline. Learn more at tower.utexas.edu.
