VOLUNTEER ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPDATES

Dear Volunteers,

With March coming to a close, we are gearing up for April, which is Volunteer Appreciation Month! This year we are asking for everyone's help to make this month special.

First, each of our sites will have supplies to write a shoutout for a fellow volunteer. Show each other some love!

Secondly, we’re encouraging volunteers to take photos of yourself and other volunteers in action throughout the month. Send your pictures to volunteers@nourishinghopechi.org to be featured in our photo montage that will be shared with all volunteers at the end of the month. (Please be careful to not take photos of our neighbors turning to us for support.)

When you submit a photo you will be entered for a chance to win a Nourishing Hope sweatshirt! We will be giving away 10 sweatshirts. Please make sure you submit your photos by Wednesday, April 24 at 5 p.m. for a chance to win.

Happy Spring!

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION PARTY IS BACK!

You spoke, we listened. You want one big volunteer party where everyone can mingle with one another. We're making it happen, folks.

This summer, our volunteer celebration will continue at our first all-volunteer party since 2019!

Come celebrate your hard work with your fellow volunteers at this festive party with food, drinks, and music! More details on date and venue to come.

Thank you so much for your commitment to Nourishing Hope. Truly, we could not do this work without you!

THE END HUNGER SOCIAL

Don’t miss our annual cocktail party and silent auction hosted by the Young Leaders Board. Please join us this year on May 9 at Joy District. Together we hope to raise $65,000 to support our community programs!

The End Hunger Social draws more than 250 professionals from all over Chicago, raising funds annually to provide food, social services and mental health counseling to any Chicagoan in need.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS

HOME NORTH DELIVERY WAGONS

The Home Delivery North team is currently seeking a volunteer to assist with transporting wagons! Use your own vehicle to pick up seven portable, folding wagons from the Hub, 5151 N. Ravenswood, then take the wagons to the delivery building.

Delivery building will either be 1032 W. Montrose, 4225 N. Sheridan, or 920 W. Lawrence depending on the week. (Ana Petersohn will confirm the location with you upon wagon pick-up.)

You will assist with the delivery distribution shift, then bring the wagons back to the Hub when deliveries are completed.

Please email alyssa.lavroff@nourishinghopechi.org if you are interested in helping with this shift!

Online Market Heavy Lifter

Skip the gym and help prepare for our Online Market Distribution at the Hub on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.!

Some of the shift will involve working in the cooler/ freezer. Closed-toed shoes are required. Volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing — something that can get a little messy.

Hub Heavy Lifter

The Hub needs your help! Help us load and unload vans, build and wrap pallets, shelve boxes, move pallets around using pallet jacks, and otherwise help us keep the warehouse running.

Most of the boxes are no more than 50 lbs. Experience using a pallet jack is great but not required. Sturdy closed-toed shoes are required.

New Home Delivery South & West Shift

We are looking for volunteers interested in distributing groceries at a senior building in the South Loop every fourth Wednesday of each month from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. This shift will require some heavy lifting and delivering door to door.

Please reach out to Julia Mendoza at julia.mendoza@nourishinghopechi.org if you are interested.

HIGHLIGHTS AND STORIES

Nourishing Hope in the News

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

March has been a big month for Nourishing Hope in the news, with several stories highlighting the increased demand for our services. First, an article from the Chicago Sun Times about the WIC nutrition program. Next, an article in the Chicago Tribune about how food pantries are navigating the recent challenges of serving migrants and asylum seekers, as well as another story covering the migrant crisis from ABC 7. Finally, our CEO Kellie O'Connell was interviewed for the Looped In: Chicago podcast.

Take a minute to read and listen to these important stories. Please know that we could not keep up with this increased demand without the help of our powerful volunteer base.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT — De'Angelo Chandler

De’Angelo Chandler joined Nourishing Hope as a pantry expansion coordinator in February 2024. Prior to his time at Nourishing Hope, De’Angelo was a freelance creative that worked on various projects ranging from theater to film.

Some notable projects include Twister (2024), Discovery’s Street Outlaws, and Disney’s The Lion King. De’Angelo attended The University of Oklahoma as a Creative Media Production major and although he has a love for art, his passions lie in the nonprofit sector. In his spare time, De’Angelo enjoys gardening, graphic design and anything entertainment.

Please welcome De'Angelo!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT — Katie M.

This month we are featuring home delivery volunteer Katie M. as our volunteer spotlight!

  • What made you decide to start volunteering at Nourishing Hope?

Although I've been donating to the pantry since 1998, I began volunteering just four years ago. It all started when my son needed volunteer hours for a church project. After only a few shifts, I was hooked!

  • What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

The feeling of making a difference toward solving the food insecurity problem in Chicago. I always leave Nourishing Hope with a smile and with a sense of accomplishment. The camaraderie among the volunteers and outstanding staff makes every home delivery shift a truly enjoyable experience and a great way to start your day.

It has been wonderful to see the pantry grow to meet the demands of the community! Witnessing the pantry expand from a small storefront on Broadway to four locations citywide is a testimony to its leadership and everyone involved in making Nourishing Hope a success.

  • What do you do for work?

I recently retired. In my last position, I oversaw the PMO (Program Management Office) for a healthcare technology company.

Thank you for your commitment to Nourishing Hope, Katie!

SHOUTOUTS

  • From a fellow volunteer: I want to recognize Maureen P. She travels from Michigan every Wednesday to volunteer. Maureen is great in every role, but a superstar with intake! I’m inspired by Maureen's dedication!
  • Shout out to Alan A. for building double pallets multiple times this month! He came early and stayed late to help make sure we were set up!
  • Shout out to Don S for his handy work with some carpentry pieces at Sheridan. As always, the pantry is inspection-ready but now it has some lovely customized pallets that look nice too!
  • Shout out to Nikki S. for being an awesome heavy lifter at the Hub!
  • Shoutout to Lena T. for her dedication to the Hub on Friday afternoons. Lena frequently stays past the end of her shift to help us out. She is a huge asset to Hub!
  • Shout out to Jenna S. for stepping in as a last-minute Home Delivery Driver after a cancellation!
