January 2022
Hello, Map Friends!
We are almost a month into 2022! We have spent the past few weeks gathering exciting new antique maps to put online, but there has also been some time for fun... the photo to the left is a trail in Crawford Notch where Perri enjoyed a snowshoeing weekend.

We are hours away from predicted 70 mph winds and an estimated 12-18 inches (or more?) of snow!! The shop will almost certainly be closed tomorrow (Saturday) due to the weather.
If snow is in your forecast, we hope you will stay safe and warm!

As always, we shall highlight some exciting new maps below, but you can always visit our Newly Listed Maps section to see everything new from the past month or so. We have a Great Maps - Super Deals category that offers our discounted items. And don't forget that we also have a category specifically for maps under $100!

If you are looking for something specific, we recommend using the search function or the "Filter By" function on the left side above the listings to search within a category.

A Nautical Chart Of the Atlantic Coast

Mariners apparently favored long charts such as this one, because it allowed them to unroll only the pertinent section needed for their location. This chart covers from Point Judith, Rhode Island to Cuba and includes Long Island, much of Chesapeake Bay, the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the entire peninsula of Florida. It has 9 inset charts of various harbors and areas: a very large, detailed chart of New York Harbor; Absecum Shoals (Absecon) or the coast between Long Beach Island and Cape May in New Jersey; Cape Fear; Cape Hatteras; Cape Lookout; A Plan of the Entrance of Winyaw Bay, George Town S.C.(Winyah Bay SC); Lewistown Bay (Lewes DE and Cape Henlopen); Bald Head and Oak Island NC; and a large harbor chart and street plan of Havana. A must for that long wall.

Le Tour du Monde en 120 Images Grand Concours du Chocolat Menier

This map features delightful illustrations of people and animals throughout the world, with a red line showing the travels of Jacqueline, a character in cartoon pamphlets who traveled the world on adventures, a bit like Tintin. This map was a promotional item for the Menier Chocolate Company, and originally had a section at the bottom upon which the owner collected tickets that were included with their chocolate- when all the tickets were collected and affixed to the bottom, and the solutions to three enigmas were revealed through Jacqueline's travels, the bottom was to be cut off and mailed back to the company, presumably for a prize, perhaps of the chocolate variety. The previous owner of this map could have sent in the bottom section, which may be why it was removed.
A Detailed Map of Florida
This detailed map shows the progress of surveying the State of Florida, including a good understanding of the Everglades, the coast, and the Florida Keys. For an early map, it has great detail. Many features we all know well, including Tampa, Sarasota, and St. Petersburg have not yet been developed. Fort Lauderdale appears as an actual fort. The railroads are just beginning to traverse into Florida primarily in the north and are along the panhandle as far as Tallahassee and in the west going south to Pensacola. A very interesting and unusual large map of Florida.

A Map Made to Celebrate Hawaii's Statehood

Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959 and this map was created to commemorate the event, with history and data up to 1959. It features illustrations throughout of volcanoes, flora, fauna, and interesting places. Additional illustrations and scenes decorate the ocean and edges, along with interesting facts and historical notes. Another serious pictorial map from Ernest Dudley Chase.

Rome - Roma (Reproduction)

Made using a combination of modern technology and traditional methods, wherein an original is scanned, its likeness is digitally etched onto an engraving plate, then the plate is used to print the image in the traditional way, with a printing press. The map is then hand colored.
