The Coshocton Public Health District:

Prevent. Promote. Protect.

Chances are you have benefited from the Coshocton Public Health District!

Debra Eppley-Health Commissioner

Olivia Elson-Health Educator

Debra Eppley, the new Health Commissioner and Olivia Elson, the new Educator spoke with us about the Health District. Our mission is to ensure equitable access to care, prevent diseases, promote healthy behaviors, and protect the well-being and health environment for all community members. Prevent, Promote. Protect.

In January 2023, the City and County Health Departments merged into what we now know as the Coshocton Public Health District. The health district provides a variety of health screenings and prevention programs. Services are designed to improve the health of individuals and the overall community.

District Health oversees health education, vital statistics-birth and death certificates, and accreditation.

Environmental Health Program performs food inspections, animal bite investigations, nuisance complaints, home and campground inspections, well and septic installation inspections, and swimming pool inspections.

Maternal and Child Health Program has been in existence since 1972 and provides care up to age nineteen. Services offered include child and prenatal care, immunizations, lead screening, lice checks, and health education.

Adult Health Clinics provide immunizations, wellness bloodwork, TB tests, allergy shots, B-12 shots

Public Health Program focuses on adult immunizations, children with medical handicaps, breast and cervical cancer programs, child fatality review board, deaths avoided with Naloxone, infectious disease programs, Tuberculosis programs, and the Ohio Buckles Buckeyes program, which provides a free car seat and makes sure it is installed correctly.

Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) provides nutrition education, healthy foods, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals for income eligible pregnant, or breastfeeding mothers, postpartum mothers, bereaved mothers and infants and children up to age five.

Emergency Preparedness Program prepares us for the worst-from natural disasters like tornados or floods, to man-made disasters like bioterrorism. The Health District partners with other agencies such as the sheriff's department, schools, other health care facilities to maximize the protection of our community. In any disaster, lives can be saved if people are prepared for an emergency. Staff are currently working on being accredited for this program.

The district's team is Debra Eppley, Health Commissioner, Brittany Taylor, Director of WIC, Tammy Smith, Director of Nursing, and Zach Fanning, Director of Environmental Services, and Olivia Elson, Health Educator.

There is an app for that! The Health District is rolling out their new app and you will not want to miss out! Use the QR Code below or go to the app store on your phone. Olivia suggests leaving the push notifications on to get any alerts that are sent out via the app. The app has an events calendar, education, information about recalls, COVID- 19 guidance, and even details the upcoming solar eclipse! Happy & Sad Dollars

Cecelia gave a happy dollar to all the new Paul Harris Fellows: Tom Heading, Casey Brown, Darrell Lee, Jason Hammond, Tisha Babcock, and Spencer Griley. Congratulations!

Tom Bryan gave a happy dollar because his daughter's publisher signed her on for two more books!

Doug Marmie is happy because of the beautiful weather.

Tom Heading is happy because he went to Chicago with the Muskingum Music Tour. It was amazing!

Shane is happy to be back from Nebraska where he saw about 15 bald eagles and was nuzzled by a 20-year-old eagle who took a liking to him!

Bob Pell is thankful for all the volunteers who are reading to the second graders. He is also happy Olivia from the health district volunteered to deliver dictionaries. Bob gave a special shout out to Tim Vance who sang at the Lenten luncheon and is a dedicated to playing in bands and singing in choirs.

Jennifer Austin also found an article from 1970 about the Rotary Club's Ladies Night with speaker S.K. Armstrong, father of astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Announcements & Business

Jennifer Austin announced volunteer opportunities for the Second Grade Reading Project.

One reader is needed at Coshocton Elementary. Three readers are needed to go to Warsaw Elementary. Please coordinate a time with the teachers. Each student will receive two free books this year that they get to keep. Rotarians visit the assigned classroom, read the book, and leave each student with a copy. They introduce themselves and tell a little bit about Rotary. Please pick up the books at the Library. Those wishing to volunteer can email me at jaustin@coshoctonlibrary.org

The next board meeting will be March 14 at 12:00 in the basement of the Coshocton Foundation. Bring your lunch!

District 6690 March Madness Wins for Women Service Project-flyers were on the tables explaining that April is national volunteer month. We are collecting personal hygiene items for women from March 18-April 2. Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, razors, and sanitary products are needed. Items will be donated to the local Salvation Army for distribution to homeless women. Final collection numbers will be reported to the district.

The Flag Committee met last week. Due to an increase in costs, the flags will now be $30.

The flags will be placed in mid-late May, and only removed after Veteran’s Day. Advertising will be email, Beacon, and social media. This will increase wear and tear and we are looking for volunteers to drive the routes and replace damaged flags. (No truck needed!). Please contact Phil Hunt, Christy Gauerke, Amy Hasseman, Jim Brown, or Roxanne Potter if you would like to volunteer.

Zambia Well Water Mathew 7:12 Project--we have collected about $18,000 and continue to connect with other clubs in our district for additional support.

Rotary Program Responsibilities

  • If you have secured an off-site program, please contact Tim Vance and President Cecilia weeks in advance and let us know if we can have a hot meal or if box lunches are necessary. Not all spaces can accommodate a hot meal option. And, if box lunches we will need a head count for program attendance.
  • Technical/Media needs. Since our system is very advanced, many laptops may not function on the system, therefore, the presentation on a flash drive is requested. Please provide this information to your speaker as it is your responsibility to manage your program.
  • How many guests will be coming? Just the speaker? Or, additional individuals? We need to be sure we have enough food.
  • Please check the link near the end of the newsletter for your program date.
  • Even if you cannot attend the meeting, you should still secure your program.
  • Any questions regarding your program? Please contact Tim Vance.
