Pastor Connection
A Note from Pastor Pat

Martin Luther called the Psalms “a little Bible.” For Dietrich Bonhoeffer the Psalms were his prayer book during his imprisonment during World War II. Within the Book of Psalms we find every emotion in the prayers lifted to God. The poetry celebrates creation with joy and protests abandonment with fervor. The greatest number of Psalms are those of lament. A closer look often reveals that Psalms are not singular in orientation. They can move from a place of orientation to disorientation to reorientation, just as the ups and downs of our lives.

In worship this week, the Psalm 71 is designated by the Revised Common Lectionary as our text. It has been variously labeled as “Prayer for Lifelong Protection and Health,” “Teaching about Managing Doubt,” and “I Will Hope Continually,” depending on the version of the translation. Open your Bible(s) and see what you find in your version. Is there a title? If not, what you put after reading it.? How does Psalm 71 speak to you at this period in your life? Where do you relate to the Psalmist’s expressions of lament, despair, praise, hope, plea, and longing for God’s embrace? How do you describe God’s presence in your life today?

Joan Chittister writes, “Hope and despair are not opposites. They are cut from the very same circumstances. Most of all, every life finds itself forced to choose one from the other, one day at a time, one circumstance after another. The only difference between the two is that despair shapes an attitude of mind; hope creates a quality of soul....Despair says there is no place to go but here. Hope says that God is waiting for us someplace else. Begin again."

“Begin again.” Every day we begin again, and God is with us. Thanks be to God!

I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday.

Peace, Pastor Pat
