March 2022
From the Director's Desk
Hello and happy March-

This month brings many things to celebrate: Women’s History Month, the vernal equinox (yes, despite the hailstorm taking place as I write this, Spring is coming!), and several Hub initiatives that are really picking up steam. I’m happy to report that our mission to elevate and enhance STEM and CTE opportunities for P-20 (that’s pre-k through post-secondary, by the way) is happening now in our region. We’re convening partners from all sectors to work as an ecosystem on everything from our early learning STEAM cohort for childcare providers and expanding computer science offerings across school districts to launching micro-job shadows for middle school students and exploring the watershed with rural STEAM educators in east Linn County. We’re invigorated to be collaborating with so many of you on these projects to move the needle for students. So, as you read this month’s newsletter, keep an eye out for programs of interest to you, your students, friends, or colleagues and be sure to reach out, spread the word, and connect. Thank you for being part of this ecosystem!

In honor of the changing of the seasons and Women’s History Month, a final word from one my STEAM heroes, Rachel Carson: “It is a wholesome and necessary thing for us to turn again to the earth and in the contemplation of her beauties to know of wonder and humility.”

Be well and wonderful,

Sarah Whiteside, Director
Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub

March is Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month and to celebrate, we would like to honor women in STEM and skilled trades who are making and have made important contributions to progress in these fields. Typically, women are the minority in STEM and skilled trades workforces, representing only 28% of the population in STEM and less than 10% in the trades. We’d like to help bridge that gap, and start our efforts with creating more visibility of the women and gender minorities already working in these areas.

A great place to start your search for some role models of women in STEM and skilled trades is our podcast, Closing the Gap. Closing the Gap features women and other gender minorities who work in STEM, skilled trades, and related fields that may typically have a workforce dominated by men.

Visit our website and check out our latest blog post highlighting Women's History Month by featuring a list of Women in STEM as well as resources to learn more.
MVSCH Media: A Step Ahead & Closing the Gap
A Step Ahead: Phlebotomy

What is Phlebotomy? Phlebotomy is when someone uses a needle to take blood from a vein, usually for laboratory testing.

Linn-Benton Community College offers a 15-week phlebotomy certification program. Join us as we step into the phlebotomy lab and see what a day in the life of a phlebotomy student looks like.
If you are a woman in STEM, or have a career in manufacturing or a skilled trade and would like to talk about your experience, contact Kacey Montgomery at montgok@linnbenton.edu.
Closing the Gap

We're back this month with OSU Ph.D. student, Jennifer Wong-Ala. Jennifer, who was born and raised in Hawai'i, is studying oceanography and putting in some serious time with social justice work on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Listen in on March 14th to catch our talk with Jennifer.

Don’t forget about last month's guest speakers, Robin Makii, an advocate for access, equity, and inclusion in tech for Indigenous American communities as well as Dr. Lisa Avery, President of Linn-Benton Community College.

Giving Opportunity: LBCC Welding Comradery Scholarship
We wanted to share this message from one of our LBCC faculty partners: Marc Rose, LBCC Welding Faculty & Dept Co-Chair.

"As you all know, the last couple of years have been hard for so many people here at LBCC. In the last year, the Welding Department has lost three of our students: Richard Mann, Larry Henry and Zach Charley.

Richard, Larry and Zach were wonderful students who loved being a part of the welding program, and we so enjoyed having them here with us.

To honor their memory, we have created the Welding Comradery Scholarship. This scholarship will assist future welding students who are struggling financially, and ensure we have a tool to help them stay in school.

We are currently seeking donations to help fund the scholarship in the hopes that we can grow it large enough to last for years to come.

If you'd like, you can donate using this link: https://lfforms.linnbenton.edu/Forms/wcs.

Or, you can help us immensely by sharing this video https://youtu.be/CQRjkbvErbE with friends and family, or on your social media platforms to help draw more donors.

Richard, Larry and Zach touched so many lives in their short time with us. With the Welding Comradery Scholarship, their legacy will live on and give hope to future generations of welding students."

STEM-CTE Hub News
Innovation Grant Spotlight: Early Learning STEAM Education
One of the goals for our Early Learning STE(A)M Education efforts is to provide professional development and resources to early learning educators, providers, and parents. Through a partnership with Family Connections, Oregon Coast STEM Hub, and the Northwest STEM Hub, we kicked off our 'STEAM Cohort' professional development series in February with 51 pre-k teachers from Linn, Benton, Lincoln, and Clatsop counties. This series of four 90-minute workshops focuses on integrating STE(A)M in early childhood settings and curriculum. Participants will explore age-appropriate STE(A)M activities to promote inquiry-based learning opportunities for young children and will learn tangible ways to invite young children to observe, explore, investigate, problem-solve, and experiment. For more information on the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub's Early Learning STE(A)M Education work, please contact Chris Singer.
Makey Makey & Snap Circuits at Scio Middle School
Scio Middle School science teacher, Niki Kuykendall, checked out Makey Makey and Snap Circuit kits from our Lending Library. With the Snap Circuits, students learn about electronics and circuitry concepts by using building components with snaps to assemble electronic circuits on a simple “rows-and-columns” base grid. With the Makey Makey kits, students can take everyday objects and combine them with the internet. Using the alligator clips attached to any conductive material you can control the keyboard of your computer, such as the space bar, arrow keys and left click of the mouse. With the Makey Makey, students can invent their own musical instruments, video game controllers, and even draw their own circuits.
