Jan. 2022
Office of the President
Happy New Year! Growth is the word that comes to my mind as we begin 2022. This spring we will welcome the opening of a new campus building housing our library, clinical, and student affairs departments. This will allow for an increase in space within our main building for new faculty and staff, to support the growth of our incoming class of 200 students this July. Growth brings new opportunities, challenges, and resources. I appreciate the commitment amongst our team to embrace the positives of growth and to approach the challenges with a positive mindset and excitement for what lies ahead.
Office of the Dean
  • Welcome back to campus and Happy New Year! Here’s hoping we all find a way to make 2022 a year of positive change and both personal and collective growth moving forward, regardless of (or maybe in response to) the numerous challenges we’ve all faced the past couple of years.

  • On a COVID-related note, I appreciate everyone’s diligence to comply with the ever-changing CDC, NMHED, and NMDOH guidelines to maintain as safe an environment as we can. And a special thank-you to our Compliance Office for their tireless work to manage all things COVID.

  • Thank you to all who participated in the Florida-themed Towne Hall on Jan. 12 to begin a discussion in earnest as we approach planning for an additional location on Florida Tech’s campus in Melbourne, Florida. We have had many good discussions already, and we will continue to involve faculty, staff, and students as we continue toward the planned Class of 2028 starting their Fall 2024 term.

Welcome back, everyone! Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and productive 2022!

The department is hosting a Physiology faculty candidate on January 13th and 14th. Our second Pathology faculty candidate will visit campus in late February.

Dr. Oviedo, with two OMS-II student authors, has published a case report in the open-access journal Cureus. The citation is: Bewley DJ, Lee J, Popescu O, Oviedo, A. It has come to our attention that our department members, collectively, have held membership in the American Physiological Society for just short of 120 years! The “winner” is Dr. Benoit, with 37 years of continuous membership.

This month, Dr. Gosselink is participating in a professional development program on Strategic Leadership for Department Chairs, sponsored by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
