Update on Main Road Corridor - Segment C Project
The purpose of the Main Road Corridor project, approved in the most recent Charleston County referendum and funded through half-cent sales tax collections, is to reduce congestion and increase capacity on Main Road/Bohicket Road from Maybank Highway to Betsy Kerrison Parkway.

During a public meeting at Kiawah’s Municipal Center on October 19, 2022, Charleston County staff and County Council Member Jenny Honeycutt presented the proposed Main Road Corridor alternatives that would improve roads, traffic, and congestion and shared the public comments collected in early spring. Prior to this meeting, the Town of Kiawah, led by Council Member, Dan Prickett, gathered input from neighboring communities and associations, including Seabrook, Kiawah River, the Johns Island Task Force, Charleston Collegiate School and the Johns Island Community Association, and worked diligently with engineers and land planning experts to review the proposed alternatives.

As a result, the Town of Kiawah Island created a proposal, the Sea Islands Way (otherwise known as alternative 7), which consists of three road improvements. One of those three components is the same as the proposal, alternative 1A, and includes improvements to the intersection of Bohicket Road and Maybank Highway.

The Town of Kiawah Island will continue to support Charleston County on the alternative that best improves traffic flow and maintains the natural beauty of the island we call home. We will provide updates to the community as soon as we receive new information. In the meantime, please refer here for more information and click here if you have any questions or concerns. With your help, Johns Island’s roads can be both efficient in function and resolute in character.

Now Open: Kestrel Court Solid Waste Center
The solid waste center located at Kestrel Court is open and accepting refuse from residents. There are two roll-off dumpsters available for trash and recycling. The compactor at this location is awaiting electrical work to be operational, and we anticipate this being completed in the next week.

The units that are there currently are temporary, as we are waiting to have upgraded compactor units installed. We are expecting these new units to arrive around the beginning of December. However, the roll-off dumpsters are open for use.

Any questions regarding the site can be directed to the Town’s Public Works Manager, Brian Gottshalk, by phone (843)-768-9166 or by email at bgottshalk@kiawahisland.org.
