Congratulations to the 2023 Winter Sports Candidates. The Winter Sports Ceremony will be this Friday, January 13, before the Varsity Boys' Basketball Game against Junction High School. The ceremony is set to begin immediately following the Girls' Varsity game at around 7:30 PM.

Print your W-2:

Employees who elected to print their own W-2 Wage and Tax Statements and 1095C Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage forms through Skyward’s Employee Access can do so beginning the week of January 24th. Click here for a tutorial.  Employees who elected to receive a paper copy of their forms will receive them in your building via the “pony mail” on January 27th. 

Human Resources Reminders:

  • February 1st is the deadline for early retirement benefit application forms to be submitted for certified staff. Click here for KPERS information on retirement planning
  • February 15th is the deadline to submit a new national board teaching certificate. 
  • February 15th is the deadline to submit ESL certification to be included in the March paycheck.


Hopkins Awards 2022-2023:

The E.L. and Z. Irene Hopkins Foundation would like to provide special recognition to those district employees who go above and beyond and demonstrate that one person can make a difference. For the 2022-23 school year, the Hopkins Foundation will be bringing back the Individual Staff awards as they were awarded through 2017. 2022-2023 Hopkins Individual Awards Nomination Form (click here)

Winter Weather:

As we all know, Kansas weather can change quickly and become extremely unpredictable and dangerous. Please be assured that the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority during all threatening weather conditions and emergency plans are in place. We have a team of administrators that watch the weather and monitor weather predictions. A decision on any cancellations or late starts will be made based on the team’s observations for the safety of our students and staff. Click here to review district inclement weather information.

On Wednesday evening, Mr. Tell Kirk, Principal of William Allen White Elementary, and several WAW students shared Fall semester highlights with members of the Board of Education.

Board Updates and Information:


McCownGordon Construction Update:

Mr. Eric Woltje, McCownGordon, Senior Project Manager provided updates on the district’s current construction projects. Emporia Middle School is 38% complete. Crews are working to frame the new administrative office space, finish hanging drywall in the science wing, and have started the roofing on the new gymnasium/storm shelter. Village Elementary is 37% complete. Crews are installing soundproofing panels in the new gymnasium/storm shelter, finishing restroom flooring, and beginning to demo the space for new administrative offices. Final construction documents were received for Riverside Elementary and Timmerman Elementary before the winter break. Drawings for both buildings are currently out for bid. Programming is tentatively scheduled to begin in February at William Allen White Elementary. 2022-2023 Budget Update:

Mrs. Stephanie Pope, Director of Business, gave a quarterly update for the 2022-2023 Budget. Pope reviewed the General Fund and the Supplemental General Fund expenses as compared to those last year during the same quarter. Overall, the district continues to spend conservatively and in most funds, expenses are comparable to last year.

Maynard Property Listing:

Board members held a discussion regarding the Maynard property listing. Topics included were building list price, requiring as earnest money, and the consideration of selecting a realtor. After some discussion, the Board voted to table the topic until the January 25, 2023, Board Meeting.


Jones Early Childhood Development Center (JECDC) School Improvement Update:

Ms. Joy McGhee, JECDC Principal, and teachers Tessa Santangelo and Ashley Bollinger, reviewed their School Improvement Goals and the action steps in place to help students meet those goals. McGhee shared that it can be challenging for PreK students to meet the intended goals since many of the students are only with them for one year. Even with the challenges, the staff is seeing much success and is excited to build on that success during the second semester. Click here to review the Jones School Improvement Update:
