How High is your Etiquette IQ?
by Roger Robbins
What stuck with former staff members about Senator Ted Kennedy? Was it his famous family? His charisma? No. It was his manners. He held doors for people, and he remembered their names.
Manners are social cement. They are the small daily transactions - a smile, a handshake, an "excuse me" - that reveal who we really are.
Emily Post's Etiquette is a comprehensive, very readable roadmap to proper etiquette. Chapters deal with such topics as "The Public You"; "Relationships"; and "Your Job" (includes "Good Boss Behaviors"). Well worth a look.
Top Tips
-In a crowded staff room, don't prepare fish or broccoli in the micro-wave.
-In a restaurant, don't comment on other people's meals or eating habits.
-Doing the "cell yell" - no one wants to hear your phone conversation.
