Sharing the Heart of God from the Heart of Downtown Macon

Mulberry is blessed to have three scholarship funds within its endowment: the J. Milton Heard, Jr., the Rosser Class, and the Nelle P. Walker Scholarships. I have personally benefitted from the Heard Scholarship, endowed to support those going into Methodist ministry, and I remain grateful for the generosity of the Heard family in endowing that scholarship! One of the great joys of my position is to now receive and approve requests from others who are seeking the Heard Scholarship. Just this semester, we have awarded four scholarships for UMC clergy and certified candidates. |
When the Scholarship Committee last met, we approved guidelines for the use of the Rosser and Walker Scholarships, which have sat dormant for several years. The Rosser Scholarship will go to support one or two students of The Methodist Home with a one time gift of $500 each. The selection of those students is determined by the CEO of TMH or her designee. This past fall, we awarded two scholarships to Harold Shoats & Anika Steed! You may have seen this photo in a previous newsletter from the time we made the award.

The Walker Scholarship awards $5,000 over four years ($1,250 paid each year directly to the college) to a member of our church and graduating senior of our youth group. Selection is made by the Scholarship Committee after qualifying students have submitted an application. My thanks to Elisa and Millie for helping develop that application process, which will launch later this month. We plan to make our second award during worship on Senior Sunday, May 21, 2023.
I say our second because we recently awarded the Walker Scholarship to Graham Johnston, who graduated from our church and youth group not long ago. Graham sent along this note:
“Mulberry family, I am beyond thankful for your support throughout my upbringing! I would like to especially thank the youth group for being an amazing Christian community that never wavered during my years of grade school. I would also like to thank Ted and the rest of the scholarship community for blessing me with the Walker scholarship. These funds have helped give me the ability to go out of state and attend my top choice school. Belmont has been an absolute joy for me so far. The atmosphere is helping me find God's purpose for me as well as blessing me with lifelong friendships. Peace and blessings be with you all!”
I’m so glad that we have these opportunities as a church to be a blessing to others and I look forward to Senior Sunday this year! If you are interested in endowing a scholarship or supporting one of these scholarships, whether making a gift now or through an estate plan, we’d love to talk! Email me or Hunter Godsey to schedule a time to discuss this opportunity.
– Ted

Second Sunday Serve!
Sunday, March 12 after worship
For our next Second Sunday Serve, we have two exciting opportunities! First, we will be supporting the United Methodist Committee on Relief by packing hygiene kits, which provide basic necessities to those suffering from disasters. Between now and March 12, we are inviting Mulberrians to give a special offering directed to purchasing the goods that go into this kit.
We are also providing CPR training! Beth Tripp and a friend have graciously offered to teach the class, which will begin after lunch and last approximately 2 hours. The cost will be $10, and participants will receive certification through the Red Cross. Space is limited for the training so reserve your spot HERE.
