Fire Risk High Through Weekend
Many areas of Texas remain in a marginal to elevated fire weather risk through early next week. Several counties in West Texas were in a Red Flag Warning yesterday afternoon as gusty winds and dry air had the potential to fuel wildfires. According to news reports, a large fire near Eastland, about 120 miles west of Dallas reportedly had burned nearly 40,000 acres as of Friday morning. Several areas in South Texas are in a Red Flag Warning this afternoon. Please use caution as outdoor burning is not recommended in these conditions. Avoid throwing out cigarettes on the ground, dragging tow chains and parking or driving over tall grass. Additionally, use caution using anything that could be considered an ignition source outdoors. According to the National Weather Service, conditions are fueled by a dry air mass, dry vegetation and strong wind gusts, which are expected to last through the weekend before a storm system arrives Monday bringing the possibility of some severe weather.
