National Love Your Pet Day is celebrated on February 20th!

Contributor: Bonnie Peloski, Community Wellness Facilitator Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority

There are many health benefits of owning a pet. Pets, especially dogs and cats, can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health. Caring for an animal can help children grow up more secure and active. Pets also provide valuable companionship for older adults. They can increase opportunities to exercise, get outside, and socialize. Regular walking or playing with pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pets can help manage loneliness and depression by giving us companionship.

Carly Jones is a Registered Social Worker. She works out of the Lundar office as a Child and Adolescent Community Mental Health Worker.

“I know that when I was growing up, you wouldn't necessarily see Indigenous teachers, Indigenous healthcare workers. I didn't feel we were well represented, and both my mom and my sister are also Indigenous healthcare workers, so it means a lot to me to carry on their ongoing work and pick up that work as well.”

Masks Strongly Recommended

Medical masks are now still available to those who choose to wear them but it is no longer mandatory for people to enter Interlake-Eastern RHA facilities with masks. Some areas of our facilities will still require masks, especially in areas where people are immunocompromised. You may also see mandatory mask wearing return in the event that a facility is experiencing an outbreak. Members of the public are encouraged to request their care providers to wear masks when caring for them which reflects our mask friendly approach. Read more from Sharedhealthmb.
