Boys Boys Boys
We hear about the Theotokos girls’ orphanage in Kolkata, but what about parentless boys? When orphaned, they, too, become victims of every kind of trafficking. They are forced into hard labor, sold or indentured, and suffer incredible abuse.

Sister Nectaria says that girls are especially vulnerable in India. “They are being forced to marry older men. Their families want to get rid of them. They consider them a burden. The best food and education is only given to boys.”

Because of the cultural devaluing of girls, Sister Nectaria’s first concern was to save and nurture the orphaned female children. These first arrivals at the hostel are now grown, educated, and succeeding. Dozens more fortunate little girls have stepped into the shoes of their predecessors for over twenty years.
It became apparent, in time, that there was also a need to protect boys without families. There was likewise concern about future husbands for the girls. Where would they find honest and trustworthy young men raised in The Faith? How could they raise their children with the beliefs they held dear if their only marital options were from anti-Christian groups? Where would the need for priests be filled if not from young men raised in an inspiring environment?

Over ten years ago, a separate orphanage was established about half a mile from The Theotokos Girls’ orphanage. Needy young boys were welcomed
and they have thrived. Now, there are more little ones and several now-tall teens. Imagine feeding dozens of hungry, quickly growing, athletic teenagers! The boys are studious, well mannered and diligently working toward educational goals. From grades 9 through 12, the boys and girls must attend a nearby private school as the new facility at the orphanage is not yet accredited for upper grades. Annual tuition ranges from $400 to $820 per student.

Sponsorships are available. Donors receive a picture of “their” student and a short biography that includes the goals and dreams to which that child aspires. Grades 9 and 10 need tuition of $400 a year. Grades 11 and 12 must attend another school where tuition is $820. Donations of any amount are welcomed at fili-inc.com. Please indicate the young man's name and class in the special instructions of you PayPal donation or in the memo line of your check.
