MONDAY MEMO
5th graders Louisa Linehan and Cora Adams, 7th grader Kingston Newell, 2nd grader Josiah Galinat, and 7th grader Brooklynn Hibshman (along with many others) expressed joy and frustration after an egg toss throw during Winter Carnival last week.
Greetings!

As is expected of non-profit organizations, Riverside's mission and philosophy guide all the decisions we make, whether they are related to policy, program, faculty hiring, or student needs. Read on below to see that in practice.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
STAFFING CHANGES
As you know, we are hiring for three positions at Riverside next year (3rd grade, 4th grade, and Spanish). If you know of anyone who might be a good fit, please suggest they send a cover letter and resume to info@theriversideschool.org or apply via schoolspring.com. As written in the job postings, “Our focus is on strong, traditional academics with curricular and co-curricular programs that focus on active engagement, leadership, and sense of community. The Riverside School is, in itself, a strong community with dedicated students, parents, and faculty. This is a happy place to work with small classes and engaged students. Creative, dynamic teachers can find the latitude and freedom to teach to their passions and strengths in a supportive environment at Riverside. The Riverside School is a flexible, kind workplace where you will immediately be a highly valued member of the community. Our children are curious and kind, and our families are supportive of our mission. It’s a great place to be a teacher.”
GSA
The Riverside GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) is a student-led, teacher-advised group established to support and celebrate Riverside’s LGBTQIA+ community. Weekly meetings are planned and run by students and consist of discussions, games, and social time. The group is open to all interested middle schoolers; allies are always welcome!
PARENT (BOOK) CLUB
We welcomed three first-timers at our final meeting of book club last week. And by the end of the discussion we all agreed that we didn't want it to end! Having an adult social gathering, and a place to discuss the thrills and challenges of parenting were too valuable to give up. Stay tuned for a date, time, and discussion prompt for a future "Parent Discussion Club."
SWIMMING
K-2nd graders will not be swimming this week, instead they will go to see the dress rehearsal of Shrek on Friday afternoon. Details about that, with pick-up location, are below.
SHREK AND PLAY WEEK (K-5 INCLUDED FRIDAY)
Play Week, a tradition developed by the faculty, embraces our mission to learn actively, lead patiently, and build community. If you stop by school this week you’ll see 6-8th grade students working together on a huge project. As teachers we remind them to use their time well, to stay focused on the tasks at hand, to strategize and solve problems, to help and encourage each other, and to be ready to show off their efforts, all important life skills. A somewhat loosely scheduled week like this would not be as successful in the fall, but after building skills in similar, smaller tasks all year, we think departing from academic classes to engage in them on a deeper level this entire week is well worth it. And come Friday night, we’ll all be impressed with how much pride and ownership our students have in the process and its result. Like so many of our special events, Play Week requires a lot of communication, flexibility, and help from parents.

MAKE-UP NOTES
Each actor should bring in his/her own mascara and eye liner in a labeled ziplock bag and turn it in to Krystal.

COSTUME NOTES
There are certain items we need most characters to bring from home; we hope they can be found in closets or among friends easily. Please reach out to neighbors and classmates if there's something you need to borrow. Take a look at the whole list, and if you have something to lend out, please email Caroline and Elly, so they can share that info. We realize it's a little late to be finding these items if you have to purchase them, and we understand, and will make-do. Thank you Caroline and Elly for rising to the challenge of leading our costuming efforts, in line with Riverside's program style, with such energy and flexibility! The list of characters and needed items is here.

That would involve driving students, helping supervise learning activities, and managing the overnight aspect of sleeping accommodations. Please email Nelia if you'd like to join in the fun!
YOGA FOR RIVERSIDE
Parent Madeleine Balcom (3rd grader Azro, 7th grader Sylvan) would like to offer yoga classes to Riverside community members in support of the school.

This series will combine vinyasa yoga with powerful pranayama breathing exercises to increase vitality and a felt sense of wellbeing. Each week a vinyasa yoga flow will be explored with beginner through advanced variations so each person can experience their own fitness and mindset growth edge. This class will be co-taught by Madeleine and Ian Balcom, who bring combined experience and training in breath work and yoga asana. Email Madeleine for payment and registration information.
SAVE YOUR EGG SHELLS PLEASE!
Carmenza and parent Claudia Lechuage (3rd grader Eula) are planning a fun arts session making ‘cascarones’ - confetti-filled eggshells traditional to Mexico for celebrating holidays – and need your help in collecting eggshells.  We’d love as many eggshells that you can save, with just the top ¼ cracked off. Reach out to Claudia if you have any questions or bring them to Carmenza at school.
NVU & CATAMOUNT ARTS ANIMATION FESTIVAL
The Vermont Animation Festival is proud to celebrate our seventh year as the only Animation Festival in Vermont! Screenings, workshops, and artist talk events will be from March 25-27, and include workshops for both beginner and experienced animators, a screening of student films, and an Artist Talk by our Keynote Speaker, Brattleboro based artist Jo Dery. The Vermont Animation Festival is hosted by Northern Vermont University in partnership with Catamount Arts and the Vermont Curators Group. More info is on their website here.
LYNDON YOUTH BASEBALL/SOFTBALL
Registration is open until March 27 for spring baseball/softball to all those age 5 by September 1. Registration and more information are here.
CHESS CLUB
Chess Club will not meet this week because of our focus on Shrek, or next week because of a meeting conflict for Mr. G. Moving on: Mr. G's teaching schedule does not allow for an elementary Chess Club, so that is over for this year. 6-8 Chess Club will meet again on April 30. Thanks for everyone's awesome support and participation!
MATH COUNTS CLUB
Math Counts Club will not meet this week; meetings are paused for the next few weeks. The next meeting will be announced in the Monday Memo soon. Stay tuned.
