Check in with yourself and take care of your

mind and body

It's important to practice self-care and seek strategies to help us maintain good mental health. In fact, some of the same self-care strategies we use to maintain our physical health like exercise and healthy eating, can also impact our mental health. It’s important to focus on these preventive actions that support your mental health before you feel overwhelmed.

  • Eat well: Learn how foods fuel your body. Click here for nutrition guides and recipes. Eating out or doing takeout? Visit a local Blue Zones Project Approved Restaurant for healthy options.
  • Get enough sleep: Did you know that 1 in 3 adults – and even more adolescents - don’t get enough sleep? Click here for more tips on sleep health.
  • Exercise: Join the Center for Health & Fitness, it’s all here, in the most comprehensive fitness center in the South Bay! BCHD moves forward with Redondo Beach portion of Bike Path project

Beach Cities Health District (BCHD), with the help of a $1.83 million grant from Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), is preparing to begin work on the Redondo Beach phase of a bike path project adjacent to its Prospect Avenue Campus.

The Diamond Street and Flagler Lane Bike & Pedestrian Path Project is under Measure M Multi-Year Subregional Program (MSP) projects for the South Bay Subregion for the Transportation System & Mobility Improvement Program. The project was recommended to Metro for funding by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) in February 2019. The project will add a bike path, pedestrian infrastructure and improved lighting and safety enhancements to improve accessibility, promote active transportation and enhance multi-modal mobility options.

Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health First Aid is a certification from the National Council for Mental Health. Similar to how CPR training teaches individuals how to respond to medical emergencies, Mental Health First Aid teaches how to provide support to people experiencing mental health challenges. It is an 8-hour training that requires 2 hours of pre-work and 6 hours of in-person instruction.

At this training, you'll learn how to assess risk factors, provide initial support and connect individuals to professional resources, when needed. The program emphasizes the importance of non-judgmental listening, empathy and validation as key components to providing effective mental health support. Participants are also taught how to identify and challenge common myths and misconceptions about mental health and how to communicate effectively with individuals who may be experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.

The training is organized around a five-step action plan, known as ALGEE, which stands for:

1. Assess for risk of suicide or harm

2. Listen nonjudgmentally

3. Give reassurance and information

4. Encourage appropriate professional help

5. Encourage self-help and other support strategies
