Eco Corner By Jenn Cameron

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a new Plant Hardiness map as of 2023! The hardiness zones have been updated from the original 2012 data and overall reflects consistently warmer temperatures across different regions in the U.S.. This means that gardeners may be able to plant and successfully grow what they could not before. However, warmer planting zones also may impact the balance of our native ecosystems, the spread of invasive weeds and plants, and pressure the established populations and migration of pollinators and wildlife in to or out of certain areas where they are dependent upon specific plants or habitats for survival.

Many people have taken note of the seasonal change unfolding across Fremont Township since January. Our weather has been unseasonably warmer than normal with trees beginning to bud and plants poking up through completely thawed soil ... in early March. Warming up so early in 2024 does not guarantee that we won't see another cold temperature snap or brief snow or icy weather conditions, but many residents are starting to think ahead about gardening - when and what to prune, plant, and prod into growing, blooming, and fruiting. Understanding the updated planting zones is information you can use for a (more) successful growing season, and it raises our awareness of the potential impacts of warmer regional temperatures.

Shred Event at Fremont Township

We have scheduled a document shredding event for Saturday, June 22 from 8:30 am til 11:30 am. You will enter through the highway department at 22376 Erhart Road.

You may bring the equivalent of 3 boxes to shred. Staples and paper clips are fine. We will not accept any binders or hanging file folders or electronic items because they catch on fire in the truck.

The most efficient way is to place your items in a paper grocery bag. No plastic bags. To keep the line moving, you will not be able to exit your car and watch the shredding.

This shredding event is for documents only. Please recycle your coupons, magazines and junk mail with your weekly recycling. They will not be accepted.

Pop your trunk and we will take the items. Do not leave your car.

We will not accept any binders or hanging file folders or electronic items because they catch on fire in the truck. If the truck fills up before 11:30, the event will be over.

We look forward to seeing you and appreciate your patience.
