Advent Blessings!

The fast-approaching Solemnity of Christmas is a golden opportunity to express all my gratitude to you for your friendship during these years. I am reminded of what Master Eckhart says: Christ can be born in Bethlehem a million times, but if he is not born in our heart, we are doomed”: let us try to do our best during this time.

This Advent Season reminds me of an experience I had in Africa. Nights in the Sahara Desert are extremely cold, as I experienced on my way to Tamanrasset to visit Charles de Foucauld’s hermitage. Strange noises at night made me ask my guide what animals they might be. He answered: “It is the desert that cries for not being the garden it used to be”.

With the Advent Season, we feel, like the desert, a deep nostalgia of our lost innocence and our thirst for God becomes more acute: "Could you, God, pierce the heavens and come to us" we pray. The invocation “Maranatha ‘Come, Lord Jesus’” sums up, as we know, the essence of this liturgical season.

Thanksgiving Sunset photo by Fr. Alex Rodriguez SX

Blue is the color of Advent, and purple too,

but we await not the sun but the Son,

and the world is not quite as respectful of the earth.

There is hardly a calm except that before the storm.

There is so much to do and so little time to do it.

Do what?

Go to work or go to school;

invest time, make money, build a church

or a towel of babel?

Make a list, shop for gifts, trim a tree.

Blue for hope or blue for the blues?

“A voice cries out in the desert:

Make ready the way of the Lord,

Clear him a straight path.”

How can we hear his voice

unless we like the earth, respect the day of his coming,

with calm.

Take time.

Take a breath.

Be at peace.

All will be well.

Interfaith Dialogue with Buddhists and our Seminarians in Indonesia

Advent Prayers

Spirit of Strength who abides with us in the sparkles and shadows-

In the midst of this glitzy season

Filled with every distraction known to people,

Give us the focus to finish what we’ve started.

May Advent draw our attention to the sweetness of the journey-

Not the saccharine superficial sentiments of cultural expectation.

May Advent enliven our spirits and energize our tired minds.

May Advent drive us away from disturbances

And give us the gall to reach into the caverns of injustice

to aid in the delivery of God’s holy righteousness.

Amen.
