Seeds of Survival and Celebration: Online Event

Monday, February 26, 2024, 7:00 PM

Register

For the past two years, the Cornell Botanic Gardens exhibition “Seeds of Survival and Celebration: Plants and the Black Experience,” has been sharing the knowledge, skill, and resilience of enslaved Africans, their descendants, and today’s Black community and their deep connections to plants, the cuisines they inspired, and the medicines that healed them.

Join the gardens for a webinar featuring the creators of the exhibition to learn how enslaved Africans used their culinary skills and plants that came with them from West Africa and new plants available to them in the Americas to prepare foods—many of which became regional staples and are part of the culinary and cultural heritage in America today. Enslaved Africans also brought and applied their knowledge and uses of plants as medicines. Panelists will discuss some of the plants grown and used by enslaved Africans in the Americas such as black-eyed peas, okra, collard greens, watermelon, and more.

Turning to contemporary plant connections, panelists will also discuss and show “Cultivators of Celebration,” a display within the exhibition that celebrates people who continue to safeguard and elevate the rich heritage associated with the plants showcased in the exhibition.

Free, Guided Bird Walk in Stewart Park

Saturday, March 2, 2024, 10:00 AM

Friends of Stewart Park will be holding a free guided bird walk with Meena Haribal from Cornell University.

This walk will be on level terrain the entire time — no hills. It will start along the lake shore and should see a variety of ducks, geese, mergansers, loons, and gulls. Then the walk will head into the woods in the adjacent Renwick Sanctuary--looking for forest birds such as wrens, nuthatches, titmice, and many other species.

Haribal has been an avid naturalist for over 50 years. She has special interests in birds, butterflies, dragonflies/damselflies, and plants. Now retired, she was a chemical ecologist by profession, studying interactions and behaviors of organisms mediated by chemistry. Her interest in birds began in India where she was a very active member of the Bombay Natural History Society. She has written two books on insects and is also an avid photographer, nature sound recorder, and world traveler.

CAPE Lecture: From Bach to Bluegrass: Exploring Musical Expectation and Harmonic Hierarchy

Thursday, March 7th, 2024, 10:30 AM

Join GRAMMY®-nominated violinist and Cornell Associate Professor of Music Ariana Kim in a journey exploring what makes us expect musical resolution and how harmonic hierarchy in Western art music works. What are the commonalities between the building blocks of Bach and folk music? What happens in between those traditions, and why might we have different innate responses to them? Through a performance discussion, Ariana will present solo violin works by Bach, Carter, Augusta Read Thomas, and a set of American fiddle tunes to illustrate this exploration.

Noted by The New York Times for giving “the proceedings an invaluable central thread of integrity and stylishness,” violinist Ariana Kim made her New York recital debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall during her doctoral studies at Juilliard and is now a tenured professor at Cornell University. At 16, Ariana made her debut with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and at 24 was appointed acting concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans; she has since become one of the most respected artists of her generation.

Cornell Concert Series - Tafelmusik

Friday, March 8, 2024, 7:30 PM

For over forty years, Tafelmusik has brought new energy to Baroque music and repertoires in its wake. In their programs and recordings, historically-informed performances of seventeenth- to nineteenth-century instrumental and choral music share the stage with vibrant, innovative multimedia and bold new music written just for the group. Each piece is played on period instruments and illuminated by scholarship, showing a “depth of insight in historical performance, diversity in repertoire, and skill in execution [that] knows no bounds” (Toronto Concert Reviews).

At Bailey Hall, Tafelmusik will perform works from Johann Friedrich Fasch, Pietro Antonio Locatelli, Vivaldi, Marin Marais, Telemann, and J.S. Bach.
