As of January 1, the City of South Gate is providing community members new waste and recycling services, including new organics/food waste collection services in compliance with California’s Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383). All local agencies are required by the State to provide organics/food waste collection programs by 2024.
When organics and compostable materials enter landfills, they can produce greenhouse gasses such as methane, which is 80 times more potent than CO2. SB 1383 is part of a statewide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of short-lived climate pollutants.
South Gate residents now have three carts: green, blue, and black. The green cart is for organics (landscaping and food waste only), the blue cart for recyclables, and the black cart for trash. Glass, metals, loose plastics or other hazardous materials should not be placed in the green waste cart. See a detailed list of what goes in each cart below:
- Green cart: Yard waste, grass clippings, weeds/leaves, prunings, flowers, fruits and vegetables, bread, meat and fish, and dairy
- Blue cart: Recyclables such as paper, plastics #1 PET (e.g. drink bottles) & #2 HPE (e.g. detergent bottles), glass and aluminum
- Black cart: Pet waste, coffee cups and pods, tea bags, loose plastic bags, and other non-hazardous materials that are neither organic nor recyclable
The City is partnering with its new franchise hauler, Universal Waste Systems, Inc. (UWS) to provide the three-cart program. UWS delivered new carts to residents from November 14 through December 31. Commercial and multi-family apartments with metal bin containers will have new bins issued between January and March of 2023. If you have questions about receiving your new carts or service, please contact UWS at 562-334-3660. You can also visit UWS' website at www.uwscompany.com/cities/south-gate/.
The City of South Gate understands that the new three-cart system represents a big change for community members. To help during this period of transition, the City has launched a new website: SortWasteSG.org. Visit the site to find program details, frequently asked questions, contact information, and more. The City appreciates community members’ cooperation and dedication to creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.
