Our next book club meeting will be April 20th from 4-5pm.
We will be limiting attendance to 25 people, however we will keep a list of interested alternates in case one of the first 25 to sign up can't make it. Because of the 25 person limit we ask that if you sign up and are unable to attend that you please call and let us know so that your spot won't go to waste.
If you want to sign up to attend, please give us a call at the store 530-272-2131 or sign up in person. Those are the only two ways to get on the list, not via email or social media, so we look forward to hearing from you soon!

The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common. Their youngest, David, is already intent on escaping his family's orbit, for reasons none of them understand. Yet, as these lives advance across decades, the Garretts' influences on one another ripple ineffably but unmistakably through each generation.

With fresh and revealing information on every page A Restless, Hungry Feeling tells the story of Dylan's meteoric rise to fame: his arrival in early 1961 in New York, where he is embraced by the folk scene; his elevation to spokesman of a generation whose protest songs provide the soundtrack for the burgeoning Civil Rights movement; his alleged betrayal when he 'goes electric' at Newport in 1965; his subsequent controversial world tour with a rock 'n' roll band; and the recording of his three undisputed electric masterpieces: Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

As the characters—deeply divided by race, religion, and class—tell their stories, each in their own voice, connections among them emerge. Driss’s family confronts its secrets, a town faces its hypocrisies, and love—messy and unpredictable—is born. Timely, riveting, and unforgettable, The Other Americans is at once a family saga, a murder mystery, and a love story informed by the treacherous fault lines of American culture.

Devastating in its power, Dancing in the Mosque is a mother’s searing letter to a son she was forced to leave behind. Welcome to Kids’ Corner where we highlight some of our favorite kids books coming out this month!

"In a book about trees, Brian Selznick shows us how to be human, how natural the best parts of humanity are. Selznick has an unparalleled gift for distilling life down to its most poignant truths. This is why his books are for everyone; they speak to those experiencing the world for the first time and to those who need to remember the simplicity, clarity, hope, and wonder of life. The illustrations are priceless and the drawing at the end of Mervin finally growing towards Louise was beautiful and evocative in the most basic, intrinsic way. An excellent baby shower or graduation gift.."

"Monsef has woven a richly imagined world where reality blends seamlessly into myth and manticores stalk in the shadows. It is a place that feels serious and weighty in scope but sparkles with the brightest bits of human imagination. More than anything, this book (like all great fantasy) shows a poignant truth about our world. The best stories are like Marjan’s creatures; something rare and beautiful that finds us when we need them most to comfort and inspire. This is one of those stories and I have no doubt it will be dear and precious to all of the readers lucky enough to find it.."

"The second installment of the Best Wishes series continues to explore some of the stickiest parts of growing up with compassion and care. This time the bracelet works its magic on three sisters, causing them to swap bodies when Addie, the middle sister, wishes to not be stuck in the middle. What follows is a wonderful story about the importance of sisterhood and how easy it is to get stuck in the rut of external expectations. Why you do something matters almost as much as what you do so it’s always a good idea to take a step back and figure out what is motivating you. With the bracelet on its way to an unsuspecting Lucy, I can’t wait to see what spell it casts next."

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.
But when she’s tracked down by the obscenely wealthy mother of a former crewman, she’s offered a job no bandit could refuse: retrieve her comrade’s kidnapped daughter for a kingly sum. The chance to have one last adventure with her crew, do right by an old friend, and win a fortune that will secure her family’s future forever? It seems like such an obvious choice that it must be God’s will.
