Bloom where you are planted!

As Spring blooms, so does Vol.3 of our Alumni Articles! In this edition, we reminisce about cherished CRNY traditions that have stood the test of time, reminding us of our roots and values. We also look ahead with excitement and optimism, as we introduce innovative events designed to unite our community in shared success. Let's go on a journey together as we spring into a new chapter of growth, unity, and achievement!

Black History Month

We celebrated Black History Month with our traditional Mass, themed "Renaissance: Celebrating Freedom and Empowerment,” and a wonderful Gala. Each event was student- led with empowering stories and remarkable voices that signify unity and love within our community. Students presented a collection of poems, songs, reflections, and prayers that made it all memorable. Athalia Morrissey '25 and Alfa Balde '25 played essential roles in the Mass and wrote beautiful pieces to reflect on the true meaning of Black History Month.

College and Career Night & Healthcare Panel

Cristo Rey held its annual College and Career Night and a newly added CWSP Healthcare Panel for students at the end January. College and Career Night, themed; "Passport to Success," took our juniors on an inspiring journey. They were encouraged to follow their own roadmaps, guided by insightful panelists- including some alums who have navigated the twists from college to career. The event created helpful connections, sparking a collective journey towards success. Students with CWSP placements in healthcare attended the Healthcare Panel, an afterschool event featuring five leaders in the healthcare sector, including Alessandra Drummond '17 of NYU Langone.

Alessandra Drummond '17

"I worked at Skadden Arps for my four years of high school. Then I graduated and went to Manhattan College, but I was undecided and wanted to see where my interests lied. Eventually since I love science and I knew I love helping people, I began taking pre-nursing at Manhattan College. I got my degree in Allied Health and applied my senior year to Hunter School of Nursing. I was accepted into the accelerated nursing program and completed my degree, in January 2023. I rested for a bit but also studied for my boards and got my license in March 2023. I work currently at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. I’m gaining experience on the job in order to find and move to another location in nursing, because you can do that easily with more years of experience. Not sure where my heart lies in nursing yet, but I look forward to finding different paths in nursing."

Accepted Students Day

On February 24th, Tiffany Tejada '10 and Bianca Salazar '15 from our Admissions Team, hosted their 3rd Accepted Students Day! This newly established tradition encourages 8th graders to get excited about becoming new Lions, Class of 2028!

The event welcomed families and friends to join the celebration of their acceptance. The day was filled with enjoyment, pastries, panels, exciting games, and much more.

Miguel De Los Santos '18

"Hi everyone! It’s Miguel, Class of 2018. It’s been a while since I have sat down and reflected on my journey after Cristo Rey. First, after my time at Cristo Rey New York, I graduated from Colgate University in 2022. I am currently pursuing two master’s degrees from Boston College while teaching full-time at Notre Dame Cristo Rey in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The first is in Curriculum and Instruction, and the second is in Educational Leadership and Policy. That may seem like a lot (and it is), but I have no one to thank besides everyone back at Cristo Rey New York. Ultimately, I would love to return to Cristo Rey New York, but I know I must continue to build my toolbox before my return!"

Spirit Week Recap

Spirit Week was as exciting as the kids are in the photos above! Each day had a specific theme that was created by the Student Council, including Twin Day and "Barbienheimer" Day! Students showed up in their best prideful attire, showcasing their excitement! The Annual Students vs. Faculty Games included basketball as well as volleyball, and Pep Rally Day was a complete BLAST.

Andriannie Santiago '17,

Penguin Random House

Andriannie graduated summa cum laude from The City College of New York with a B.A. in creative writing while simultaneously obtaining her publishing certificate from CCNY’s Publishing Certificate Program. Having a passion for books, she knew working editorial in the book publishing industry was her calling. While working towards her degree, she gained invaluable experience as an editorial intern at Macmillan’s Flatiron Books for over a year, during which she worked on amazing books such as Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber and Unbound by Tarana Burke. Currently, she is an editorial assistant at Penguin Random House’s Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, where she works on a wide range that varies from picture books to young adult. Some titles she's had a hand in are The Teeny-Weeny Unicorn by Shawn Harris, Lucky Duck by Greg Pizzoli, Murtagh by Christopher Paolini, Where There's Smoke by E.B. Vickers, and many more. She’s passionate about giving different voices a platform and is looking forward to acquiring her own titles very soon.

Rose Rosado '14, Lehman College

After completing my graduate degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, I was eager to get into the field and build connections with clients in the Bronx. I worked at a high school and at Montefiore before transitioning into my position as Associate Director of Student Disability Services at Lehman College. In my role, I assist students with advocating for their needs, evaluating accommodations, preparing for their transition into the workforce, and connecting them to external agencies. My compassion for others motivated me to pursue a career in the counseling field. My goal is to make every student feel seen and heard. Having a different ability doesn't mean they aren't capable of accomplishing the same goals as people without disabilities. I work with students to learn that is okay to ask for help and utilize the resources provided.
