Hanson Ranch Ride c.1994

President

Melissa Diggins

Hi Ladies,

I hope everyone is having a great new year. We will have our Fillies General meeting in March; the date will be announced soon. We have put together a nominating committee to find new board members for a couple of positions that will be open. We have the publicist position open starting right after our general meeting. If you are interested in that position, please contact Judy Adams. If you would like to know more about what the publicist position does, you can contact Nicole Liddi. I will be back on the ballot for president but only for one year to get the board member's terms back on track as Covid-19 in 2020 offset the terms of the board members. We also chose our honorary filly of the year and that will be revealed at the general meeting. Please try and get your rides in and hosted before December. Please follow our protocol on hosting a ride. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in March at the general meeting.

Sincerely,

Melissa Diggins

Hello Fillies’ Members…I am enjoying these cool and sunny days to ride; I hope all of you are getting in some trail time as well. December had several end of the year rides, as we all made the mad dash to get our rides in. Hopefully 2024 will have rides spread out a bit more.

I am in the process of planning the general meeting so save March 21st for this event. More info to come with the invite.

Hope to see you on the trail soon,

Ellen Johnson

Hoping this finds all of you gals healthy and well in this first quarter of the New Year. I’ve had to say goodbye to a few too many people this past year and personally, I’ve never felt more blessed to have my health, an amazing life complete with a great husband, treasured friends and of course, all my 4 legged babies. With the change of seasons comes a few more changes; this will be my last entry to the Fillies' newsletter.  I’ll be passing the torch as VP in March and getting ready for an even bigger transition with a move to Oregon. It has truly been an honor to be a part of this group and serve on this incredible Board. My heart is full with memories of many amazing rides, your smiling faces, warmth and cowgirl spirit.

Keep riding, smiling and being the fabulous cowgirls that all of you are”

Cheers and Happy Trails,

Deb Biddinger

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had wonderful Christmas and New Year’s celebrations with your family, friends and critters. For those who weren’t able to join us for our Christmas Party, you missed a really fun time and a delicious meal!  As your treasurer, I am happy to report that our account balance has increased nicely since most members have sent in their renewals and dues – just in time to pay that necessary annual insurance that will be due soon.

Looking forward to a great year of riding with my Fillies friends.

Happy Trails 😉

2023 is done and we had a total of 17 Rides last year! We gained 2 new Fillies for 2024, Marsha Griggs and Shelby Kittle, both are accomplished riders and are a great addition to our group. The membership meeting is coming up in March and I hope they can come and you can all come, and meet our new members. This is my last newsletter as I am leaving the Fillies Board. It was fun and I served with a great group of gals. I will miss the camaraderie, but I have some new goals on the horizon that I want to focus on. See you all on the trail!

Lisa Byrne

Dear Fillies,

As you know, for the last couple of years, the newsletters have included articles on the history of several of the great ranches that we are privileged to ride upon. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing the research and learning about these places and being able to share it with all of you. I am also an avid lover of photography, especially nature photography, and the majority of the photos included in the newsletter content over the years are pictures that I have taken. Choosing photos is incredibly difficult for me as there have been far too many that I have wanted to include of our beautiful valley and all the wild things that live and grow here. That being said, after eight years, the time has come to pass the publicist's baton onto the next member that will keep you informed of all things Fillies. I have had much fun both in creating photo books as your historian, as well as in creating newsletters that I had hoped would be both visually appealing and having relevant and interesting content. Since this is my last newsletter, rather than a specific ranch, I thought I would turn the focus back onto all of us with the history and origins of The Fillies and how the group came to be.

I would like to thank founding members Sue Vasek and Alice Olla for making my idea for this newsletter a reality, and a special thank you to founding member Paula Hunsicker for taking the time to write this article, and going through the archives to find me early pictures of the Fillies.

I wish the entire Fillies' membership and Board of Directors a happy, healthy, and safe 2024 with many hours of looking between the ears of all your amazing horses. See you gals out on the trail!

Signing off....

-Nicole S. Liddi

THE HISTORY OF THE FILLIES

It all began in 1993 with nine SY Valley horsewomen (Chris Burns, Ann Chamberlin, Audrey Griffin, Claire Hanssen, Paula Hunsicker, Julie Morrell, Alice Olla, Diana Stetson, Sue Vasek) gathered around Paula Hunsicker’s kitchen table. We wanted to create a women’s riding group that would include several horse breeds, have a large membership, and provide multiple rides per year on the magnificent private ranches of our beautiful Central Coast.

Unlike other riding clubs whose Board of Directors plan and produce events, we wanted all Fillies members to share the responsibility of hosting rides and empowered them with full creative license to plan events. To be an active club, with hopefully monthly trail rides, we required three rides per year to retain membership.

Most importantly, we wanted to establish trusting relationships with local ranch owners to be welcomed on their magnificent private ranches.

Those two goals were the centerpiece of writing our by-laws, submitting necessary paperwork and securing insurance. Next, we carefully and respectfully reached out to ranch owners for permission to ride on their beautiful land.

The founders also shared a safety first perspective when establishing our trail riding rules and etiquette. We decreed all guests would be assessed by their riding ability, and the compatibility of their horses on group rides. We were sticklers and through the years make the hard call to not allow horses to participate again if they were difficult or dangerous. We owed it to the membership and the ranch owners. Nothing spoils a day in the saddle like a sour horse!

In 1994, our first ride was hosted by founder, Alice Olla, on Santa Barbara Thoroughbred Ranch and we had 50 riders. Sandy Simon and Susie Simpson put on the first ride at Webster Ranch and consecutive years for more than a decade. Pete Kern and Susie Hanson offered the inaugural ride on Hanson Ranch and Sandy Simon continued that tradition for 28 of the last 30 years. Ranch owners, Don and Susie Hanson, have been present at every one of them enjoying the camaraderie and lunch.

For 30 years, we’ve enjoyed a variety of events, mostly trail riding lovely ranch terrain teaming with wildlife. But, our creative membership also hosted overnight camp-outs, beach rides and how-to clinics to advance skills in backing up horse trailers, cutting, sorting, gymkhana events, trail courses, dressage, roping, reining maneuvers, and veterinary seminars. All things horsewomen love to do with like-minded members and their treasured horses.

The remaining active founders are Claire, Paula, Alice and Sue. Inaugural active members; Tina Carroll, Karen Jenkins, Lynn Kirst, Sandy Simon and inaugural social members; Leigh Layman, Sherry Musgrove, Susie Simpson have hosted rides and/or served on the Board of Directors.

Our club has evolved and changed a bit over the years, but the basic principles have remained true to the original vision. We remain grateful to our ranch owners and all those who have served faithfully for the longevity of the Fillies.

OrthoFlex Trail Saddle

This saddle looks brand new. Lovely two tone leather - check out the darker trim on the fenders and pommel. Not even a scruff on the cantle. Super comfy seat. I'm selling it for a friend who kindly allowed me to try it for several months. Won't work on a horse with no withers or flat sided. I know. I really tried. Meanwhile a true peach of a saddle. Center fire cinch. Check out those lovely rawhide stirrups. Flocking is thick and like new. $1000 or best offer. I'm happy to let you try it out. Want more pics? Measurements? Get in touch.
