Ask a Native Triton...
Each month we like to profile one of our amazing Native American students at UC San Diego. If you would like to nominate a Native American student at UC San Diego for us to feature you can email us at itrc@ucsd.edu.
This month the ITRC is featuring Annastacia Espinoza
as our March Native Triton!
Name: Annastacia Espinoza
Tribe: Apache and Shoshone
Hometown: South Central Los Angeles
Major: Psychology

What’s some of the best advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I have ever been given was not really given but was read. I kind of gave it to myself. I read a quote that said "I'm not telling you it's going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it." That quote has gotten me through all my adversities and hard times, and I live by it.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, dance in the dark, write and I spend time writing band and skate interviews, I also am passionate about several different issues and causes in this world, and have been an activist since I was a kid. I like to spend time advocating and doing activism for various issues because I want to help create much needed changes and this is a huge part of who I am, fighting for others.

What do you like best about your major and/or minor?
I love brains so I really love learning about psychophysics, psychobiology, neurology, and neural circuits. As well as learning the different facets, concepts, ideas and research in my field. I love to learn!

What We've Been Up To
Powwow 101 Meeting

Arena director, Richard DeCrane, led an online workshop on the history of powwows. Richard led a discussion on what a powwow is, why it is significant and how to plan one. This was very helpful for anyone interested in powwows and got us even more excited about our upcoming 11th Annual UC San Diego Powwow on May 21st!

Black and Indigenous Voices Event

ITRC x BRC hosted Latifah Safiei as the keynote speaker for the Black and Indigenous Voices series. Latifah is the program manager at Black Like Water and a member of the Cherokee Nation. She spoke to us about her lived experience as a Black and Indigenous woman, detailing her family history, challenges she faced while navigating tribal identification, and pre-colonial ethnic connection to water identification.
Skoden Wellness Club

Native Triton alumni and Indian Health representative, Shandiin Armao hosted Skoden's first in-person event at La Jolla Shores Park! Wellness Club members met up for some exercise, snacks, and a discussion about wellness. Look out for an announcement for Skoden's next event!
