"Inspiring students to love God, their Catholic faith and learning"

Bessie Coleman, affectionately known as Queen Bess, defied societal norms and discrimination in pursuit of her dream to conquer the skies. Born in 1892, Coleman faced a world that told her that flying was not an option as a woman of color. Undeterred, she worked as a manicurist and maid to finance her aviation aspirations. She ultimately earned her pilot's license on June 15, 1921, becoming the first black woman and first woman of Native American descent to achieve this feat. Despite encountering setbacks and prejudice, Coleman embarked on a brief but remarkable career as an ace pilot, tragically cut short on May 1, 1926, when her plane crashed during a rehearsal flight. Her determination paved the way for future aviators.

Black History Month, celebrated annually in February, commemorates African Americans' rich and diverse contributions throughout history. As we mark the 48th anniversary of this observance, it serves as a poignant reminder to reflect on the struggles, triumphs, and cultural impact of the black community. Amidst the well-known figures who have played pivotal roles in shaping history, it is essential to shed light on lesser-known but equally influential black leaders. Often operating outside the spotlight, these individuals have made lasting contributions to spirituality and social justice.

A Prayer for Black History Month:

Compassionate God,

who sent Jesus Christ to deliver us from all manner of injustices and inequalities, create in us new hearts and enlarged visions, to see the image of God in every person irrespective of background, race and ethnicity. May we be generous in our love of others as we work towards ending racism and injustice; creating communities of human flourishing, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen

You’ve been nominated!

We’ve got good news! Our School has been nominated by your teachers and parents for the Catholic Schools Week promotion from Tiny Saints and 4 Marks Printing. You are one step closer to winning a free Tiny Saint for every student and t-shirt of your patron saint for every staff member - a prize valued up to $10,000.

Now, all you have to do is get as many votes for your school as you are able. Voting is easy, make sure you send your school’s teachers, parents, friends, parishioners, and anyone else 18 years of age and older to the link to vote. You will then be entered into a raffle and one lucky school to be chosen. The more votes you submit, the greater your likelihood to win. Just keep in mind that this is only open to people 18 years of age and older - students are not allowed to participate.

Every vote increases our probability of winning, so don't delay in working to win this gift so our teachers and students can grow in devotion to their patron saint.

The voting window closes February 22nd at midnight, and the winner will be announced on February 23rd.
