Updated for the week of November 26, 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hello Everyone,
We continue to decorate for Christmas and enjoy having so many residents helping out with this big job!

We are happy to announce the winner of the family scratch ticket raffle is Bonnie Brooks!! Congratulations Bonnie! The Spirit Squads thanks everyone who participated!
We are seeing COVID-19 increase in our community and remain on constant alert as to safety and attention to infection control precautions. The residents are our primary concern. Commencing on Monday, November 29 we are going to re-introduce Rapid Antigen Testing for all persons entering the Home. This testing will be required once per week until further notice.

Available times for this testing are as follows:
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am – 11:00am; 2:45 – 4:00pm; 5:45-6:15pm
Saturday and Sundays – 10:00 – 11:00am; 12:45-1:15pm; 3:30-4:00pm; 5:45-6:15pm

In addition to rising COVID numbers, we are also seeing an increasing number of respiratory (cold) outbreaks in daycares and LTC homes. While we are open to general visitors, we would really encourage you to consider if your visit could be done via a phone call. Together, we need to really work to maintain a balance between the importance of social connections and infection control. If you have ANY cold or flu symptoms or are generally not feeling well, please, postpone your visit and allow for ample recovery time prior to your next visit.

As a reminder, the only point of entry into the building is via the front entrance so that you can be screened in by our screeners. This is very important. Please make a note of the two 30 min time blocks that the front entrance is not manned to avoid frustration. (12:15pm and again at 5:15pm)

We have released our Annual Resident Satisfaction Survey as well as Family Satisfaction Survey. As in the past 4 years, we have partnered with 6 other LTC Homes around the area so that we can compare and contrast our results. This year, we are fortunate to have a number of Napanee District High School students completing their co-op with us and they are assisting the residents to complete their survey. Partnering with the High School is an excellent way to expose students to LTC and hopefully attract them to work in healthcare in some capacity!

The Family Satisfaction Survey link is below and I would encourage you to complete this survey and provide us with your suggestions, compliments and comments.

This survey will close on November 30 2021

With Christmas approaching we are often asked for gift ideas for residents. Please check out our suggestions later in this newsletter for some great ideas.

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext 7224.

Chat with you in our next newsletter on December 10.

General Visiting Hours
General visitors can enter the Home between 10am – 7pm.

If the resident requires assistance to get outside and you are not able to enter the building to pick them up, the visit will need to be pre-booked using our online booking tool - Picktime here.

Given the increase in screening that will be required as we continue to re-open our doors, we do need to initiate no entrance/exit daily between the hours of 12:15 – 12:45pm and 5:15pm- 5:45 pm. This will allow staff to take breaks and complete required tasks associated with the screening and infection control processes.
If you are coming to assist your person during the meal time in their room, or have booked the Gibbard Family Dining Room, please ensure to arrive prior to these times as the door will not be manned during the no entrance/exit hours listed above.

COVID-19 Testing
for Essential Caregivers Not Fully Vaccinated
You are required to have a rapid antigen test at the Home each day you enter if you are not fully vaccinated.

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff. (2:30 and 6:30pm)

Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.

Absences from the Home
Short Term Outings – Leaving the property for social or other reason but not overnight. This does not need to be booked or approved. However, it is important to note that if the resident is going out with a non-essential caregiver, we will require you to reach out to the charge nurse on the residents floor to arrange a pick up time.  Anyone picking up the resident must come into the vestibule and go through the active screening process but do not require COVID testing. Residents who are able to complete these short term outings independently need to ensure they complete the Sign Out Book located just outside the nursing station on the counter.

Temporary Outing – Leaving the property and includes overnight of one or more nights. For these overnight outings, the ministry requires an advanced approval process for these absences. All temporary outings must go through the Manager assigned to the Resident Home Area. This is the form to utilize.  Please note that upon residents return from an overnight outing, they must be isolated, have a PCR test and await the results. Upon receiving a negative result they can come out of isolation.
Resident Home Areas -
Who to call when you have Questions?
These Resident Home area extensions below will take you to the Charge Nurse who is the RPN on your persons floor.

The RPN is a great person to connect with if you have questions related to medications, health status updates, or general resident centered information.
This is the best person to start with.

If they are unable to answer your question, they will be able to direct you as to
where to go next.

The RN Team Leader extension is an option if you are having difficulty accessing your respective home area or have further concerns.

If following speaking with the RN Team Leader, you continue to have questions or concerns, please reach out to

Emily Sarley RN who is the Assistant Manager of Nursing (ext 7227) or Carol Corcoran RN who is the Manager of Nursing (ext 7226).

Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building
This training needs to be completed prior to your first visit and then monthly thereafter.
A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

Infection Control from the desk of Emily Sarley
While residents do love seeing you, we really do need to exercise serious consideration and diligence when considering coming into the Home for a visit. This is a congregate living environment, so the risks elevate in terms of exposure and spread.
We do have excellent coverage in the Home with the majority of residents having had their third booster dose. All staff are fully vaccinated as well.
Here is some graphical information from KFLA Public Health (as of Nov 24)

Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiverIn the event that COVID restrictions are changed, it will be important to have this essential caregiver designation in place in advance as it is difficult to predict the restrictions that we may be directed to implement.

Should the resident/POA wish to change/add an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted. There is no limit to the number of essential caregivers that a resident/POA can designate.

Message from the Chair of Family Council
Highlights of November Family Council Meeting

1)      Alternative Call Bells - If your loved one has difficulty activating the traditional Call
Bell contact Emily Sarley re: other options available.

2)      Presentation M. Moslehi Clinical Consulting Pharmacist with CareRX- in the home one day per week and conducts medication reviews on each resident yearly as well as every
three months. (reviewing residents’ charts, changes in medical history, labs and all
documentation to identify any issues with medications)

3)      Carol Corcoran Head of Nursing answered questions:
a.       Blinds are being removed from each home area and office reconfigured to
make more efficient and accessible.
b.       Stressed the importance of not contacting or talking with the nurse while
medication is being dispersed. Unless an emergency try to avoid
these times- 8:30-9:30, 11:30-1:2:30, 3:30-5:00.
c.       There continue to be staff shortages in all area PSW, RPN, RN. and JPC is
actively pursuing candidates as well as students in related programs doing
placements, 9 Co-op students have had placements.

4)       Phone system not going to voice mail at times- this is being investigated and if
you have such an issue, please email Bobbie Joe Blackburn

5)      Smart TVs are being installed in each home area that will allow for a wider range of
programming and some specialty programming for those with cognitive impairments.

6)      There is concern about those residents who wander into others' rooms having
access to potentially harmful products (soap, mouth wash hair spray). The Council
and staff will be investigating ways to mitigate this. Some things that were
suggested: keeping hygiene products in a basket on a higher shelf in the bathroom,
child locks on cabinets where personal things of importance are being kept, keeping
doors shut when residents are not in their room. We will be investigating what other
homes do and looking into Dementia safety designs.

7)      Review of access to the Dr. If you need to speak to the doctor, please inform the
Nurse and they will contact and set up a time for you to speak to him.

8)      A business in Perth is selling Canadian-made adaptive clothing. They offer online
sales and in-store fittings. www.wheredragonsflyperth.ca

Please consider joining us as we work to improve the quality of care for all residents.
