9th Annual Celebration of Holiday Lights Contest Winners
|
GOLD: With its retro feel, this home on Coronado Ave. in Bluff Heights exhibits many classic holiday elements that brought the spirit of an earlier time to all who viewed its decorations. Bluff Heights residents will be transported to a period of wonderment and joy as they walk or drive by this home. The winning resident was quite excited to learn of their prize, a $50.00 gift certificate to Flamin Curry Indian Food Restaurant located at 3344 E. Broadway/(562) 343-7319.
|
SILVER: Walking by this home on Orizaba Ave. in Bluff Heights, you’ll almost feel like a member of the royal family as you promenade through the lighted arches that line the front sidewalk. A mixture of new and old decorations makes this home a special addition to the Bluff Heights neighborhood. The winning resident was very excited to learn of their prize, a $35.00 gift certificate to Gallagher’s Pub and Grill located at 2751 E. Broadway/(562) 856-8000.
|
BRONZE: We aren’t sure whether this home on Molino Ave. in Bluff Heights was beamed down from another planet, but it’s safe to say that the future of holiday decorations is here. The “HOLIEGGS” shown here have either hatched or will hatch soon, releasing the festivities of the season. Going by their colors, it’s certain that the alien forces occupying this front yard are both friendly and peaceful! Who knows; you might finally take that ride to a planet far, far away! At first, the winning resident was taken aback, and then quite enthusiastic to learn of their prize, a $25.00 gift certificate to Hug Life Anti-Dairy Ice Cream, located at 2707 E. 4th Street/(562) 343-5991.

Another Successful Bluff Heights Feeds
|
A BIG thank you to all in Bluff Heights who donated such a wonderful selection of foodstuffs for the “Help Me Help You” food pantry. Your donations go directly to the homeless and less fortunate in our Long Beach communities, especially during the holidays. The Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association would like to thank the Bicycle Stand, located on Broadway near Temple, for hosting our pantry box. The Bicycle Stand has been a dedicated supporter of our food drive for many years.

What to Watch Guide Part 2
Many of us will be hiding out from the latest Covid-19 variant at home for a while longer, so our screens might be our main source of entertainment for the next few weeks. To help us get through this next wave, I’ve rounded up several of the shows
I loved in 2021.

The Tale of Two Bungalows
Recently I was informed about a “very interesting older woman” who has lived near me in Bluff Heights for many years, whom I had never met even though we are quite close in age. I was told that she had once been a lawyer and that she had quite a few stories to tell about her experiences with urban wildlife.

For the Love of Trees Part 5
Tree planting in the Bluff Heights area is just around the corner (no pun intended), and is scheduled for 2022 in cooperation with Long Beach’s I Dig Long Beach tree-planting programs. You will receive an invite to join us in planting trees in the
new year.

Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of
Olive Oil
Many years ago, I read a New Yorker magazine article about the crooked olive oil industry. I never forgot about this article because it reminded me of a family story I heard as a child.

Violins of Hope
The Long Beach Symphony is proud to present “Violins of Hope”, a concert commemorating and featuring a unique collection of restored instruments played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust – many of them in concentration camps. These instruments were saved and have been painstakingly restored. They represent the love and tragedy of many musicians and listeners; the destiny of millions of people; and the power of music to transcend the darkest hours of humanity. Learn more about the violins HERE.
